Tell the kid that when his transcript gets misfiled on the computer.
I've had problems with a typo in a name. Bureaucrats couldn't find it. This will be multiplied. But, that's okay. You and your kids are likely not affected.
What are the additional expenses to families?

Rest assured, if it turns out to be anywhere near a million dollars to change the name, then having Stuart not be selected this time will ultimately turn out to be a win for you. No other school will be renamed by the school board because it will be deemed too costly, and they will have real numbers to show why renaming is a bad idea.
No, the millions will be to rename more schools. I thought that was clear. And, it will be near a million. And, it will continue--or, at least the effort will continue. Keys-Gamarra is already on record as supporting name changes to Lee and Woodson. No, the Board will not want to do it because of the expenses--but the precedent will have been set.
FCPS staff has already shown documented expenses to be at least $650 K--and that is just the large, obvious expenses. It does not include all the extraneous things that have been forgotten. Nor, does it include the admin expenses.
And, this does not include the additional expenses to families.
Hope you are happy.

And yes, I'm happy. Money well spent IMHO. For a system as large as FCPS, a few million dollars to indicate that we don't worship Confederate losers who fought to keep other humans enslaved is totally worth it.

Anonymous wrote:Neurotic? Neurotic is thinking that changing the name of the school is so important that you will spend millions of dollars on it. And, yes, that is where this is going. There are many more schools affected than most realize. If any name besides "Stuart" is chosen, that is the path this will take.

Confusion for graduates? Will they somehow forget that the school was named JEB Stuart High School when they attended the school? Is the "JEB Stuart" diploma so prestigious that the name change will disadvantage all future graduates to come? I think maybe keeping the Stuart name might be what would cause confusion. I predict students spending countless hours each day ruminating about which Stuart the school is named after. Is it Martha Stuart, Stuart Little....The options are endless.
You do not have any idea how easy it is for administrative paperwork to get messed up, do you? Transcripts being requested and misdirected, etc. Schools names not matching, etc. Sent to wrong addresses. SAT scores, recommendations, verifications, transcripts, job applications, transfers, clearances, all sorts of things.
Clueless.

Think Braband reads DCUM?
Hope he goes with the motion and sticks to the stated suggestion. He's going to have a hard time defending anything else. I don't envy him.
What is the "stated suggestion"?
The Superintendent will be criticized either way here, so he should go ahead and do what he believes is right, and move the process forward towards a quick resolution.
Having heard Scott speak directly to his focus on "equity," it's unimaginable to me that he'd simply recommend "Stuart HS" knowing that it's a Confederate name that puts his school system in a negative light.
The stated suggestion? I'd assume the motion put forward by the School Board.
As for "Stuart High School"......the JEB would be dropped and, it would just be a name--which is all it really is in any case. It doesn't mean anything.
It would keep the alumni connected and help the school system save money. It would resolve a lot of confusion for graduates and please the taxpayers.
