Don’t even bother. You’re screwed no matter what you do.

42, about $750K in 401 and $250k in cash. My husband has about $750K in 401K and $150-200K between another post tax investment account and cash. We have 1 home paid off, current value about $950K. Income combined is about $300-#350 depending on the year.

I'm 45 and spouse is 43.5. A few months ago, we had about $1.7 M in our combined retirement. Haven't looked recently.

Age * 100k would put you at 3.5mil, no? I think you mean age * 10k -- though where are you getting that metric, never heard it before. I've heard 2x income at 35 from Fidelity.

40 and 38, around $1.2M collectively in various retirement accounts.

At age 40, I had $275k.

I'm 48 now and have $800k. I've been lucky to have some really great company matches.

I turn 40 next year. Currently have $315k in my 401k. DH (same age) has a little more in his, so around $650k total.

Is that rare? Most companies I’ve worked for did 100% match up to maybe 6% or so. And a few did better than that.

I maxed out my 401K contribution every month while I was working. My husband did as well. Very few investments can compare to 50 percent matching.

I'm 37. DH is 38. We have about $570 combined between my TSP and DH's 401k. We also have $16K in 529s for two kids and $200K in other savings. We don't own a home. Maybe someday? Every time we run the numbers, renting is better than buying, but when I look at what we've saved that seems crazy since we could own a home with no mortgage if used our savings to purchase a house.

I'm feeling really behind. DH and I have maybe 100K total across retirement accounts, 35 and 37. We both had student loans with no family help. We do have a house in DC tho, that is already worth much more than we paid for it 3 years ago plus we were able to put 20% down because we got on the property ladder right after the housing bust. We just started maxing out this year. Before we were both only doing enough to get the max match (one private, one fed).

You're fine. You're probably not on track to retire early or anything, but if you max out for the next couple decades you'll have a big stack. If you're working another 30 years as a fed you'll also have a decent pension, plus SS. I wouldn't worry about being "behind", just focus on the future. You're doing far better than most.

+1 you're doing it -- in another ten years, you'll be able to make humble brag posts on dcum about your progress
