It's a mystery! It's my stock answer and it works for a lot of people who are desperate to believe that they are being watched over by a loving God, despite all the evidence against it.

I am an atheist too. But if God did exist and I met him, my question would be why all the suffering? Why all the kids suffering of cancer or other fatal diseases? Why did he/she allow all these people kill each other or make others suffer in his name?

If this is back to the original AMA thread of ask an atheist, then although in not the OP I'll say yes, I think people are wrong if they think anyone has an "immortal soul" the way religions conceive of it.
