It is not about what she deserves. These companies have brands that have been carefully cultivated and marketed. As long as Deen was good for their business, all was well. Someone at these companies has decided that keeping Deen will create negative PR for their brands thereby potentially costing them money. Once this blows over in a few months, some of these sponsors will quietly take her back. It happened with Tiger Woods. But it is just too hot right now to keep her aboard. It's about the money.

another black woman here -- i don't necessarily think it is a matter of deserving to lose all of her ventures...i think it is a matter of those with whom she has partnered to do decide they do not want to be associated with what she has done...if only tangentially...

That's what I'm trying to get at. This board has some very judgmental folks on it (can't go to that school because of ESOL or FARMS, I can't buy in THAT neighborhood). Those are underlying stereotypes which are just as hurtful to society than saying a slur.

I'm just not into the hypersensitive PC crap. I teach my kids to respect everyone and don't use slurs out loud but have thought them PLENTY of times. Have you ever driven here???

???? Why would you even think slurs? Why? I grew up in DC and have driven in the DC area most of my life. I don't see the justification in that for even thinking slurs. Nobody's going to know, so you're in the clear - don't worry! Don't fool yourself that *thinking* slurs isn't having at the very least a slight negative effect on your behavior, because it is.

Oh please! She cannot have it both ways! She is a public figure who has made a boatload of money because of her celebrity. The downside to that fame is that everything you have said and done will be scrutinized to the nth degree. It is part of the deal and it happens to all celebrities at some point.

She should work on giving a more sincere apology, lay low for a few months, resurface and talk about how much she has learned and "soul searched" in that time. America loves redemption stories. But she should NOT continue the "glass house" tactics of your common 5YO.
