Yes people do not become federal employees to make money. It’s because they believe in service and the mission. I make about the same as your husband’s friend and I have a Master’s degree. If I worked in private industry I would be making over $200k.

Most of the Feds I have ever worked with are smart, hardworking, and passionate about serving this country and trying to make the world a better place. But of course, they expect to be paid enough money to feed their families and save for their futures, so they are apparently enemies of the people.
Sadly, the average American has the worldview that “productivity” = making more money (for some CEO) = inherent value. What value is being generated by Forest Rangers patrolling National Parks? Look at all those trees! There’s still money to be made in lumber, is there not? Fire the “leeches”, clear cut the forests, make the billionaires richer. That’s the new American way.

Trump coming in with a shaky mandate and doing a lot of this through something like proper channels: Sure, people would freak out about that, too, but there wouldn’t be widespread terror.
Trump doing this without any kind of respect for any laws or rules or any effective oversight: That’s dictatorship activity. That probably leads quickly to killing fields. That’s terrifying. Getting bad people out is great, but justifying having a dictatorship because it gets the bad workers out and undoes some stupid regulations is foolish. Bureaucracy is annoying, but it’s there to protect us from dictatorship and killing fields.

We live in a regular middle class neighborhood in the Midwest (DH a fed in the field) and it’s not like he’s making any more than the other white collar workers around us. And the trade workers aren’t far behind him. This seems much ado about nothing.
