That part didn't shock me whatsoever. Dr Ruth was Jewish! You can be religious AND sex positive in Judaism. The issue was more that she was a total moron.

Haha this reminds me of before I met my now MIL and FIL, who is a rabbi. Based on my maiden name (which is Italian) MIL thought I wasn’t Jewish and my boyfriend (now husband) had to tell her I was. I’m sure she was freaking out initially.

Thank goodness your boyfriend (now husband) didn't have to dump you for his parents/religion.

Yeah, it was like Carrie Bradshaw dates a rabbi. Very silly but I needed something light in my life and their chemistry sold it well enough for me.

After watching this whole thing, I feel like the show runner must hate Kristin Bell. She’s ordinarily cute and likeable but her hair looks dirty and stringy in every episode and some of her outfits are awful. (That brown shirt with the holes in front she wears to the basketball game is wildly unflattering and it looks like they forgot to give her a bra.). And her character is really annoying and has almost no really funny lines.

Noah and his brother are, homwever, both really funny and likeable and have a lot of great lines. It’s worth watching it just for them. I also like the sister, and the older rabbi.

I hated the ending and I really couldn’t get past the lazy writing about his parents. Why make them Soviet Jews? It made no sense for the following reasons:
1) she said she went to NyC at age 6 with her grandmother. Even assuming she was in the first wave of Jews to immigrate, and she went to nYc like a week after arrival, that would mean she was born no earlier than 1964, which would make her 60 now and she seemed much older. But if she emigrated at age 6, she wouldn’t have an accent like that.
2) Soviet Jews generally don’t speak Yiddish.
3) soviet women pretty much always work so when the Kb character asked the incredibly rude question about what her job was I thoroughly expected her to snap back that she was a nuclear physicist in the old country, and semi-literate KB could just take a seat with her smugness.
4) why did she have an Israeli accent? I guess a sensible narrative would have been her family emigrated to Israel when she was little, and then she moved to LA as an adult? The whole thing just made no sense and I really could not understand why they felt they needed to build them any backstory, much less a backstory that was super distracting in its inconsistencies.

And PS why would anyone want to date/marry a person whose only job is to talk about their sdx life in publicly? At least with comedians like Amy Schumer, she is almost certainly making it all up.

Anyway, the whole show felt like it was 50% really great and 50% terrible. What a missed opportunity.

What made no sense to me is she didn't keep the dog, she just gave it to a shelter. I don't really see how it made her a good person at all. It felt pointless.

First 3 episodes so good.

But episode 4 has the played out trip to embarrassing place and meeting someone important cheating on spouse. But so worse the adult asking a child on a date.

Then episode 5 Noah crashing a super important work meeting.

I’ll keep Ashley but kinda done with show.

I didn’t know who he was before this so I just looked him up. He’s attractive in this one but WAY more attractive without the beard.

He was in the OC. They should have cast Marissa as the flaky sister.

Justine Lupe is perfect at the sister. She is hilarious.

Yeah she’s great. Another thing that’s funny about her character in this show is that she actually played an overzealous Jewish convert wife on the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - which I think was her funniest role ever - but here she plays such a wasp.

Another funny parallel that maybe has not come up is that Adam Brody was Lane's boyfriend in Gilmore Girls who wasn't fully accepted by her family because he wasn't Christian or Korean.

His departure really ruined Lane's life. I am still mad about that storyline!

He had to bail out on filming because he had another commitment. It’s the creator of the show who messed up and went for that lazy sad angle for Lane after.
