It was natural gas.

There is no other reason why the suspect would have been shooting off a flare gun (which shoots flaming flares) inside his own house.

This was a natural gas explosion.

News reports say that authorities had turned off the gasline to the house earlier in the standoff. Perhaps there was enough residual gas, though? The way that house exploded and collapsed I presumed this guy had some sort of stockpiled explosives.

No, it ignited due to the flares. look it up. Inflammable

That seems silly. So you would never buy a townhome or rowhouse? Because of a rare isolate incident with a crazy person? Do some research on the neighbors, and 99.99% of the time you will be fine. Don't buy a home adjacent to a house with covered up windows.

+1

Also, property owners are in the public record. Before making an offer, Google the people next to you to see if they post paranoid delusions.

Anyone with a mental illness should be put on a public watch-list, so home buyers can just google them, and avoid having to live near the mentally ill.

Agree.

I would not want any of those people in my neighborhood.

Do you even hear yourself? We do have something along the lines of basic civil rights left in this country. While I do agree that dangerous people should not be allowed to hurt others, I am NOT ok with the government creating watch lists of people who their neighbors have decided are a little "weird" so they must be dangerous. Was this man convicted of any crimes before yesterday? I bet not. So what are your grounds for "tracking" him? Putting crazy stuff on the internet? Half of DCUM would be on this list.

How about harassing federal officials, abusing public resources with frivolous lawsuits, and stalking/making threats against his neighbors. This wasn’t just a quirky homebody.

We should put all the mentally ill on a watchlist, so the rest of us can choose whether or not to avoid them.

We should put all of the gun owners on a watchlist so the rest of us can choose whether or not to avoid them.

YES YES YES.

Then anytime one enters somewhere ID is checked, an alert pops up that indicates this is a gun owner, just so people can heighten scrutiny around them in case they decide to resolve differences with their weapons.

Me again, I say this as a member of a hunting family. Responsible gun-owners should not fear additional scrutiny!

Great your responsible but many are not....how do we know.

Don't they have renters insurance or home owners insurance to cover the loss of their possessions?

$40k for your things in a tiny duplex seems like a lot of money to me.

As someone who lost everything in a house fire, you get a current value of your possessions. The used sheets on the bed that cost $80 now are worth $10. It’s like when insurance pays you out for a totaled car. It never covers the current cost.

What chemicals were they pumping into the house just before it exploded?

Tear gas.

Would the tear gas have ignited the explosion? Sincere question.

Omg no.

How the heck can someone’s mental health issues/danger to society be so obvious and yet we do nothing? Honestly this incident was a failure to this man as much as the surrounding neighbors. He clearly had paranoid delusions and was likely psychotic. Would have been better to stabilize him with medical treatment than deal with this fallout.

Talk to the ACLU and their friends. It’s virtually impossible to get an adult institutionalized and these groups have opposed even minor changes to the law that would make it slightly easier.

It’s honestly absurd. We go SO far to protect the rights of the mentally ill, drug abusers, homeless etc. to the detriment of the general public. Can you imagine what the poor neighbors must have gone through living next to this guy? And look at all the people allowed to just camp out on public grounds in prime spots of DC. Or the mentally unstable guy who kept flashing people and wasn’t arrested until he hit a preschool teacher and jerked off in front of a bunch of toddlers.

It’s like we’re all supposed to sacrifice our own feelings of safety or being able to enjoy public spaces because society instead values the rights of paranoid schizophrenics and drug users etc. to do whatever they want because it’s their “right” to crap on a sidewalk and show their junk to people and write disturbing ramblings on the internet.

And just like I ask my kids when they want to do something selfish, what would happen if everybody did that? What if everyone decided to email the FBI and tie up our courts with frivolous lawsuits? What if everyone decided they wanted to cover their windows in tinfoil and make weird online accusations about people?

Enough already with mental illness/drug use/etc. being excuses for people to do whatever they want to the detriment of others.

You're arguing with democracy and the Constitution. Take it up with the old dead white guys. And, maybe consider the alternative which to me is just as scary. What if my neighbor decided I was weird because I didn't bring a gift to her holiday party and because I kept my window shades down all of the time? What if she called the cops on me because of these things and the cops believed her? What if my parents locked me up in a mental institution because I had an "attitude" as a teenager? I think we've swung far away from some pretty scary times (McCarthyism??) and maybe we've gone a little too far but I'm not willing to go all the way back

ITA. There are too many whackos intent on pointing the finger (to detract from themselves).

I live near and felt the concussion so suspect it was more than residual gas.

If you re-watch the video, there is a “secondary.”

A “secondary” means a second explosion initiated by the first explosion. Something else blew up after the perp set off the gas with his flare gun.

A can of gasoline? A propane cylinder? Some paint thinner or other household chemical??

Who knows. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and firearms (and really really big fires) will probably help with the investigation and issue a report.
