I think you are handling this wrong. Just go to the cabinet and get another glass and fill it up. If they want to have to wash glasses all day long, let them.

Some people think you should keep and use the same glass for hours. Others think you should get new ones throughout the day. It’s like how to hang toilet paper. There is no right or wrong. Just do what they want in their house and go get a new glass

I'm with you, op. My family (husband and child and I) have a glass of ice water available at all times. My son and I prefer insulated tumblers with lids/straw. My mom goes around picking up glasses and it drives us batty.

At their lake house, my MIL would (yes, as someone asked) issue everyone a reusable plastic cup and write our names on them with a sharpie. Yes, it was weird, but I guess it helped her with the urge to pick up half full cups. And saved her from having 3 cups per person to wash at the end of the day.

Then my husband and I would have a group of friends to the house (without the inlaws) and our friends would be like "oh, this cup says Uncle Shelly, is it ok for me to use it?" Yes, every cup in the house is plastic and has someone else's name on it. You can use Uncle Shelly or the Dora the Explorer cup that says "Ronnie Jr" for your margarita.

What we have is the tale told, and it is COMPLETELY consistent. You know this woman has weird food fixations, too, just by reading the first post. So many of that already picked up on it.

And if her MIL doesn't actually hummingbird around snatching glasses as soon as they leave her guests' hands, and if she does let them shut the bedroom doors all the way when they sleep (WTF), etc., then yes, the answers to OP would be different.

It doesn’t seem like anyone had to “search” very hard to find a reason. Not letting guests sleep with the door shut, going into their room and taking their own personal water bottle, being weird about food, expecting people to sit around and talk 24/7, not deviating from plans ever? If that were my parents or my ILs, DH and I wouldn’t have to convince each other to decamp to a hotel or the house of a relative who is generally a better host.
