I had a friend in high school whose mom hit a deer while driving. The deer basically got stuck in the windshield, and as it struggle to get free, it basically pummeled my friends mom to death. In the head. What a crappy way to go.

A toddler tried to run ahead to catch a bus in my neighborhood and somehow got sucked into the wheel and got stuck and then run over. It happened right in front of her parents, her siblings and a bunch of other people. She lasted about a week before dying. It was really horrible and her family never really recovered.

Omg this is one of my biggest fears.

Mine is that a childhood neighbor was out jogging and was hit by a team of drafting cyclists.

We also had a plane crash on my street and a couple people died in the house that was hit.

A guy I work with ran out for lunch when I worked in Manhattan and a bus speeding down street the passenger side mirror perfectly aligned with his head where he was standing at edge of curb and killed him.

I was at the beach recently over spring break and these people were trying to get their umbrella into the sand by twisting it left and right, left and right, and I said to my husband "that ain't gonna cut it" and sure enough a huge gust of wind hit and it came flying directly at me, pole side directly coming right at me. This happened to me too. The person who had put the pole in the sand was infuriatingly cavalier about the whole thing. I got a concussion and my vacation was ruined, but it could have been so much worse.

You need to have the kids who rent out the umbrellas put them in the sand for you. They know how to do it. And if you own an umbrella, learn how to place it correctly.


Seriously. I'd rather just rent the umbrella and have the person who does it 100x a day dig it in for me. If you give them $5 they'll help you with your own umbrella, too.


I frequently go to the beach and always worry about this on really windy days. Tourists who put up an umbrella once a year or once every five years have no idea how to secure them.

One of the assistants at my dentist's office slipped and fell at home and hit the back of her head on the coffee table. No one else was home and by the time they found her she was dead. She was in her 40s. Coffee tables have made me nervous ever since.

Someone at my college had a seizure and died in a dorm shower. She wasn't found for several hours until another student finally realized the shower had been running nonstop the whole time and looked around the curtain.

A few years ago the older sister of one of my son’s classmates was drinking with friends her senior year of high school. She was worried about getting caught so started drinking lots of water to try to dilute the alcohol in her system. Drank too much water and died of water intoxication.

Not anyone I knew personally but I’ve always thought that the great molasses flood in Boston is one of the freakiest accidental death stories I’ve heard (20 people died)
