This happened to me! A friend of my sister's from our hometown just happened to move near me. We were getting together for weekly coffee and she mentioned her book club. I was overeager and said I'd LOVE to join a book club and she said she didn't feel she could bring a new member since she was new herself. I was intensely lonely at the time and remember feeling hurt, but looking back I know I was being ridiculous.

So just tell her the truth. "Unfortunately, the group has decided over the years not to add new members."
