This happened to me! A friend of my sister's from our hometown just happened to move near me. We were getting together for weekly coffee and she mentioned her book club. I was overeager and said I'd LOVE to join a book club and she said she didn't feel she could bring a new member since she was new herself. I was intensely lonely at the time and remember feeling hurt, but looking back I know I was being ridiculous.

This has come up a couple of other times over the years and the consensus has been, we all like the same kinds of books, and we've basically just kept it to us.

So just tell her the truth. "Unfortunately, the group has decided over the years not to add new members." Then, either offer to help start another group with her, or read books together just the two of you, or encourage her to start her own group. And stop talking about a private group to non-members.

+1 And in the future keep your mouth shut about social gatherings you don't want her to join. It's rude to babble on about things you don't want to include her in.
