Yeah I read this too! I was freaking out before reading it and now I'm like...woah, what are we doing? I don't know who to believe because I am not an expert in these areas but I tell you what, if you want to be less stressed out and afraid, read this article.

I have not heard many firsthand accounts and I wonder if families were spared while one person became ill (not counting asymptomatic carriers)

I read close quarters transmission rate is about 10.5%. Non close quarters is much, much lower. Let me find that article and I'll post it for you.

Not the article I originally read, but: https://www.the-hospitalist.org/infectiousdisease/article/218769/coronavirus-updates/covid-19-update-transmission-5-or-less-among

Initial rate was 10%, but that decreased to 1-5% as information about the virus crystallized and quarantines and other practices took place.

The problem with generalizing the fatality rate for the Diamond Princess to the larger population is that it doesn't take into account how many of those people who survived were hospitalized, and continue to be hospitalized. Yes, it's survivable, but in many cases it takes weeks of hospitalization and intense medical care to get that outcome. That is why the spread of the virus needs to be limited as much as possible.

Yes absolutely.

Along the lines of the Bay Area.

- stay in the home
- leave only for urgent medical needs or to get food; care for elderly or infirm
- grocery stores, hardware stores (for urgent repairs, not refurbishing your deck), pharmacies and banks open
- restaurants for meal delivery if necessary to elderly

walking, jogging allowed but only within your own household group. No outside groups larger than 5 to help make sure this is happening.

no playdates, no visiting with other families, no motorized traffic unless one of the above essential reasons.

Do you all think there will be a national lockdown or will it (decision) just occur at the state Level?

FWIW, I do believe hogan is considering one for Maryland given that he is trying to be aggressive about this (note his school closures).

Yes. Remember it's exponential spread, so one day it doesn't look so bad and then all of sudden it does.

NYC should've done a shelter in place yesterday. They know they're going to have to do it and every hour they wait makes the problem worse. Time is the enemy.

BTW, I'm one of those who was trying to ring the alarm on this board. We were just trying to warn people so they could get prepared. Hope some people did.

Mostly yes, everyone gets it. In China and pretty much everywhere.

That's why in China they opened up large fever clinics. You saw pictures of them setting up beds in convention centers? Places for people who had fevers and tested positive, but didn't need hospitalization, just supportive care, chicken soup etc.

People could move in there (or were forced to move in there) and be cared for, while trying to keep their family from catching the disease.

I really wish we had these centers set up here in the US.

I am shaking my head also. I'm an elementary school teacher for Pete's sake. I was one of the early posters on that original thread and I could see the writing on the wall right after the Diamond Princess cruise ship cases showed there was spread in Japan from the cruise ship visitors before they got quarantined.

If I can know these things.... why didn't our CDC?

We kept being told "wash your hands" and "the risk is low".

The experts knew. The White House leadership was in denial.

And thankfully there were many strong local and state leaders who took charge.
