I am a lifelong progressive Democrat. Typically, progressives center the narratives of people directly affected and allow them to define their own oppression. But now that they see an opening to criticize Israel (75% of this thread is foaming-at-the mouth, over-the-top, ISIS-level anti-Israel conspiracy propaganda), suddenly what actual Iranians say and feel doesn't matter to them at all. I don't care that Israel was involved here. I simply do not care. If they're the ones that create a catalyst for change in my country that ends up freeing 93 million people from the hellscape they've been living in, great. You people are so BLINDED by your maniacal hatred of Israel and to a lesser extent Trump (who I'm no fan of generally) that you can't perceive the absolute absurd hypocrisy of your position.

It's fine to object to this on the basis that it's not America's affair and they should stay out of it, because tax dollars or whatever BS (so far, only six American service members have (tragically) died, so I really don't think it's concern for our troops). Immoral position to take in the face of this regime, but ok. That's not what most of this thread is doing, though. People are instead moralizing at actual Iranians and pretending to care about the girls school that was bombed (unconfirmed that this was even Israel/the US and not Iran itself) or the future of Iran. Where were you when this regime murder FORTY THOUSAND OF ITS OWN PEOPLE?? When it tortured dissidents in secret prisons, threw acid on women for not covering their hair, literally went into hospitals where protesters were being treated and shot them point blank in the head? You don't give one flying f about Iranian people. Please don't pretend otherwise.

As far as I can tell, so far, all America has done is kill (extremely justifiably) a bunch of monstrous butchers and weakened their grip on power. This may or may not lead to regime change, but I can tell you for damn certain the regime is not going to be able to carry on the same way after this. Absolute WORST case scenario, the regime persists but its nuclear ambitions are done for and it becomes more friendly to US interests.

Two things can be true at once. The Ayatollah was bad (was going to say the world is better off now, but I'm honestly not certain that is true bexause of the way this has been handled) AND this administration is a clown show being led around by the nose by Israel AND international law and human rights are being violated, and for what reason, the administration has not been able to clearly communicate.

First of all, America, the most powerful nation in the world, is not being "led around by the nose" by Israel (although of course, the war is also in Israel's interests). You have been taken in by the most obvious propaganda. This conflict is independently benefits Trump for many reasons, including that it distracts from the domestic issues he's facing - no need to fumble around for other explanations. Even if America was being controlled by Israel somehow, though - how does that change what I've said in any way? This strike was objectively good. It has so far led to good outcomes for Iranians. What comes next is unknown to me and you, but as to what has happened thus far - what is your objection exactly?

You do not care about international law and human rights. If you did, you would have been equally vocal about this regime's slaughter of its own people, but I'm willing to bet you were not. International law is a fiction. In 2023, Iran was appointed to chair the Social Forum of the United Nations Human Rights Council. You read that correctly - the HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL. If international law allows Khamenei to kill 40,000 of his own people and threaten Israel and the US with nuclear annihilation, but does not allow the US to stop him, then what does international law achieve exactly? Who does it restrain and who does it benefit?

No. Of course I don't. But I think this administration's interests and my people's interests happen to align in this instance.

Let’s hope that despite the incompetent, bumbling efforts of this administration, the current campaign in Iran provides an opening for lasting, democratic change. The Iranian people have suffered enough. However, from everything I’ve read, regime change requires boots on the ground for a sustained period of time. I don’t think the American people have the stomach for that, nor should they be expected to. And I say this is a hyphenated American with dual citizenship who sees geopolitics from the vantage point of my two countries.

Okay so why do my kids need to die for this? We can’t go around doing things so other people can be happy at our expense. We need health care in America. We need to support our next generation. Not get into random wars because some people are happy.

How is every single service member and veteran not in a rage?!

MAGA doesn’t want them acknowledged in death?! WTAF!

Is there a thread on the ridiculous WH briefing yesterday?

Karoline was a bit extra yesterday.

She arrived at the podium already fully enraged and aggressive. She went off on a tear about CNN’s coverage of Trump. But I think my favorite part was when she went off on a tangent about prior Administrations and their “stupid” and “dumb” foreign policy and deals with Iran. It was like a SNL skit.

Don’t be naive and use some common sense. Nobody would ask to bring this upon themselves. They are in the direct line of fire.

Lindsey graham went to Saudi Arabia two weeks ago and met with MBS. Apparently to convince him to support and advocate for the war. MBS said no.

Lindsey went back and told Trump that MBS was on board. Trump told others who then told Wapo.

Not sure if this is all true. But MBS is pissed. So maybe. I wouldn’t put it past Lindsey to lie about this.

Surely you realize politicians/leaders are apt to say one thing in private and then another thing publicly, right?

“By all means, please deal with Iran. We are tired of their antics.” (Privately to a coalition that likely had notice that the attack would occur)

“I am outraged! Of course I would never support such a thing!” (Public spin)

I mean, that’s just politics…especially when it comes to the ME.

Sure, that happens.

This could certainly get better and turn out to be better for Saudi Arabia in the long run. Or it could get much, much worse. It's chaos right now.

So, no, I don't think MBS wanted this, as the PP who has studied Saudi Arabia said above.

Sigh.

If you think the US and Israel haphazardly attacked Iran without a courtesy heads up and some level of support/greenlight from allies/potential retaliators in the region then bless your heart.

Not haphazardly…deliberately.

Deliberately and strategically with intel and support from the regional players who matter.

And you think that this administration gives one f about the Iranian people?

You people are absolutely f'ing deranged. I am Iranian. My parents are Iranian. My entire very large extended family is Iranian. Every. Single. One. of the Iranian people I know are absolutely THRILLED with this turn of events. They are literally taking to the streets and celebrating, including here in DC.
