When poor people are displaced to suburbs they lose access to jobs and services. Look at what happened to the public housing residents of MD who were moved to places like Glen Bernie, Beltsville, and Gaithersburg.

DC has some taxbreaks, like the homestead act, to help residents stay. They could look at more things like that? But if a neighborhood is gentrifying they may see a chance to make a buck? You can't forbid them to sell and move to the burbs, and you are correct--it is then near impossible to get back 'in' on the market .

This might come as a surprise to myopic urbanists, but people work in the suburbs, too.

DP but I like the US a lot and I also like Singapore, and China, and a bunch of European countries. Personally the US is the best country for me to be in right now. That could always change. I want to be in the country that gives me the best lifestyle for what I do. A lot of that has to do with money. I have to admit, walking around China, living there for a few weeks at a time, I can’t tell the difference in my daily life. When I was in Singapore there were some odd rules. I recall that my friends advised that I not make any disparaging comments about any religions, even jokingly. That was a bit of a turn off. But if someone offered me a 50% raise to move to China or Singapore, or any Western European country, I’d take it. I can sacrifice a little freedom of speech (a little) for some nice money
