We work in different fields. I am in IT and no way. But I also don't wear frilly overly feminine clothes ever because I like silly. I tend to go tailored with no ruffles.

Jeans and cashmere sweaters always in style. Ditto jeans with a white button down with the sleeves rolled up. I knit so I'm ALL about the sweater. I love unexpected details like sideways cables at the sleeves, neckline and bottom.

Leggings look great with Vince sweaters in winter. Add some boots for a really cute look.

I love shawls but after seeing photos, decided I look like a Babushka in them and only use them for warmth when needed.

Bloomingdales (aka 'The Mothership) carries some great classics in these lines and often has some great sales!

Tahari, Theory, Halston, Donna Karan, and are even carrying Armani. No one cuts like Armani. I repeat - no one.

When I'm feeling a little bit funky, I tend to move towards Ralph Lauren! I love his use of (probably faux) turquoise stones. Looks great with boots and a hat. Great stuff for wearing on stage at an open mic. Dream boots for me are Frye lug-sole Dorados. Looking for a used pair - I want them broken in.

I deal in vintage clothing and jewelry and discovered 1950s dresses look hideous on me. I can pull of 1920s, 30s, and 60s. The 70s was the decade fashion forgot. And those shoulder pads in the 80s could get huge!

I shop secondhand and have gotten lucky, especially as a 43 year old mom. I will say I'm in pretty good shape and that helps, as does the fact that I don't care if the tag is a bigger size than the one I think I should be. And I'm ruthless about being a label snob and style snob when I thrift.

I went to Lord & Taylor on Saturday and looked first at the "younger" stuff by Tracy Reese and BCBG (outfits total around $350) and then the "older" stuff by DKNY, DVF, Theory and Weekend Max Mara (dresses $490, outfits $400-1,000) and was surprised at how shoddily most things were made. Some of my friends think secondhand is gross but I think it's he way to go nowadays.

Yesterday I saw work dresses with only one sleeve!! Are these people nuts???

PP here. Nope, not unless your office is pretty casual. Otherwise, forget it. But I was mostly just trying to find things that didn't show too much skin or weren't ridiculously covered in ruffles.

I work in a semi casual office but I would never be taken seriously in any of those dresses.

Many of those dresses would look terrific on my neighbor's DD. Who is 17 years old and 5'10. But I don't think her budget allows for $350 dresses.

Since I am neither 17 nor 5'10, they get a hard pass from me. Ironically, I do have $350 to spend on a dress.

I think I have to spend more money to get the look that jcrew & banana rep etc used to provide and I don't have more money.
