funny. former parent here who had a 30 minute commute to SD location. never once thought the school exclusionary because they weren't giving my kid a ride to school. it was my choice to attend that school, and stay there after the move to NE, therefore my responsibility to deal with the transport.

I'm just saying it is more complicated and not about seeming wealthier families. It has a dual immersion model. I think it is mostly about real estate availability. The SD building isn't for sale.

And the site they found happens to be close to families who speak the target language. It is also closer to big bus transit routes -- MO Ave, 14th St, 16th Street.

So LAMB is moving to Ward 4 because they prefer one ethnicity over others? Is that your argument PP?

White children were the minority in both wards in 2015 (17% in Ward 5 and 26% in Ward 4).

Latino students are a bigger demographic group in Ward 4 than Ward 5 (Ward 5 18.5%; Ward 4 30% ) and Black children are the dominant group in Ward 5 (63.2% in Ward 5 vs. 46.2% in Ward 4).

It is also interesting to see this trend for the last 5 years. The percentage of young white children is increasing in both wards, and in Ward 4 the percentage of black and Latino children is holding steady. Latino children are gaining as a percentage of population in Ward 5 whilel the percentage of Black children is decreasing in Ward 5.

What location are you advocating for? Which bilingual school will it be so close to? Have you been to Ward 4 lately? Sure housing prices are rising, but currently I would say it is the most economically integrated ward in the city. Sure LAMB is whiter than a majority black charter school, but it is definitely more diverse than any of the schools west of the park and the most diverse I've seen, in terms of mixed representation, not just majority black, majority white etc.

So what would make you happy a move to the poor SE as opposed to "rich" Ward 4? Or are you upset because you live in the NE and LAMB is not moving there? The school is already a white school, are you working towards integrating "poor Latino families" at the school? do you socialize with them and invite them to your house for dinner? Because the way I see it every morning the white parents greet and chat with each other and the poor Latino parents chat with each other or run out the door to their jobs. Have you ever noticed that the listserve is used by white parents or well educated Latinos but not working class Latinos? Go and testify and try to force the school's hand, I suspect that such efforts will not change the course of this deal. You should know that if they are letting parents know then there's 80% chance this deal is almost done.

Hmm have you seen the kids at the school lately? Check your kid's classroom list and tell me how many true Latino students are in each classroom. The bilingual immersion model is at jeopardy at LAMB because they are not getting enough Spanish speaking students and have instead focused on growing the school to cater to white and wealthier families, there are families that had kids with Latino nannies and speak a few words of Spanish and thus the school qualifies those kids as Spanish speaking. I know many people at LAMB who are in the "Latino" group for school census purposes but the only Latino thing about them is their last name. LAMB had a Latino majority years ago, the demographic has changed dramatically as it has changed for the rest of the city.

Latinos are a varied group. The term is an ethnic term that means you come originally from a Spanish speaking country. So, my white child is as Latino as the darker children at school because his parents are from South America. The black Latino kids are also just as Latino when their parents hail from the DR, Panama, etc.

Please be careful how you use the term Latino. It is exclusionary and racist to exclude whites and blacks from it.

Also, in the US, you are considered Latino if you have one parent from a Spanish speaking country. There are many, many children at LAMB of mixed ethnic heritage with one Latino parent.

You may wish that more children at LAMB look like you .....but it is a rainbow school with kids of all ethnic and racial origins.

My husband works in Gaithersburg and I work in London county. Getting to any campus that's not in our back yard is difficult for us. We work at home at night because we get to work late. And leave early. How is our situation any different than yours? LAMB has the opportunity to have a great building with ample green space. Kings bury is a unicorn. Stop your whining and threats.
