The numbers in VYS was incrising every season until last year (Spring 2014). So, why the numbers are decreasing now?

Travel pulling large number of kids from House to replace former Vienna travel players who departed to other clubs.

In midyear?

Actually, that's kind of hard to track. Can't really compare fall to spring. The initial post here compares spring to spring, which is fair.

House kids play spr 2015 in rec, try out for traviel end of season, accepted to replace departing former travel players, don't come back following year to house, travel numbers appear to stay stable spr 2015 vs. spr 2016, but house numbers decline spr 2015 vs. spr 2016.

I'm not sure how much of an exodus VYS had among travel players in 2015. They always have some players leave, of course -- some to other clubs, some military families, etc. In the age group I knew best, absolutely dominant House players either made the ODSL teams or didn't make it at all.

That said, I'm not sure how many new people VYS has ever attracted. People may leave VYS for other clubs, whether they're bound for DA/ECNL/other elite teams or just grumpy. I'm not sure how many people switch clubs to come TO VYS. It's a community club that doesn't seem to bring in a lot of people from outside Vienna. (Eddie Lima always said he would always prefer Vienna players.)

But for a general year-to-year decline, I'm not sure how to account for it. In my two age groups (both boys), we're swamped with players. Fewer girls? Fewer older kids?

While people are quick to critique VYS' travel program, I'd put their house/recreation program up against any club in the area. They have some field space issues because of the program's popularity (every club has this to some extent), but they do a commendable job trying to accommodate the needs of the teams.

Too many travel teams?

I actually do wonder what will happen with the kids who'll get cut from travel when they switch to birth years. Granted, that'll be true in many clubs -- some years will have a sudden surplus of players (or a sudden deficit).

I'm surprised by that number, though. The House leagues are still huge. U10 boys -- 5 travel teams, 14 House teams.

VYS pulled out of the Suburban Friendship League for the older teams. They have teams of mixed ages (U15-U19) just play each other. Maybe some people did not want that.

What sends a horrible message is anonymous posters talking about other peoples' young kids on an Internet bulletin board. The answer to your question is that it is none of your business where other parents chose to have their kids play. Focus on your own kids and the message you are sending to them and others in your community by griping about other peoples' kids here.

There are plenty of factors that go into a decision of where a child plays soccer. Plenty of families have kids in multiple clubs.

On the flip side, how many people were willing to step up and make the time commitment to be on the board?

Maybe if the people who spend all their time dissing volunteers would step up and volunteer themselves, things would be better. Or more ego-driven. Hard to say.
