I'm guessing that this is the case as well-- thought they could bring their kids in, and then found out they couldn't. I disagree with the misunderstanding part, because when they found out kids wouldn't be allowed to come in, they should have gone back home. Leaving two little kids in the car is inexcusable.

OR TAG team taste---one goes in...and when they finish the next one goes and enjoys it. Since they live so close other spouse could have waited at home with kids didn't even need to be in the car. It's so weird. They weren't even reporting running out to check on them...they were in there over an hour before being dragged out by police.

So all of you saying that you have a "mutual friend" with them--what is your friend saying about this? Anyone have the inside scoop? What WERE they thinking?!?!?!?

OK - what facts do we have? What time were they found? 5.30pm? Or 3.30pm?

At 3.30pm, maybe the 2 and 3 year old have extremely reliable naps (not mine - as soon as the car stops, they're awake). Maybe they thought they could get away with an hour because their kids would reliably sleep in their coats in the car (I am not justifying this at all, just trying to understand the parents' possible thoughts). But at 5.30pm, no 2 or 3 year old kid is going to be sleeping. So that's just weird. What time would this event have been on for? Is it a sit-down meal? Or stand around at a bar and try wines while having some nibbles? 3.30-5pm or something?

I too have a mutual friend on FB. She looks so sweet and normal! Can't imagine what their explanation is. I wonder if their kids were napping and they foolishly decided to let them sleep and periodically check in on them.

So my DH is an independent software consultant and makes $550-600k. I am a Fed of similar level as that woman and make $150k.

Yeah but that's just it -- I wouldn't view it as an emergency situation; no one is screaming, no one has fallen down etc. I'd walk by thinking -- 2 kids in the car, interesting -- I guess mom/dad just ran in to pick up the dry cleaning and didn't want to unstrap 2 kids. It wouldn't even occur to me that the kids had been there for more than a minute or that their parent wasn't just inside a store looking at the car through the window as they paid for their goods. So I wouldn't consider it my business. Now if I walked back and an hr later and saw them still there, maybe I'd think something was up -- but I'm not sure that I'd be motivated enough to get involved; I'd hope I'd call 911 and go on my way.

Well fortunately the woman who found them that evening didn't share your viewpoint. You sound a bit depressed or disconnected - most people don't have to hope they would call 911 if it bothered them, they would act.

They were gone for over ONE HOUR...and they only reason they left then was because the Police came and got them out. WTF???? It had to be cold as ball in that car. Those kids don't have verbal skill yet at that age.

I have zero sympathy. If they had no sitter and wanted to do a tasting---they at least could have tag-team'd the event. They lived near-by. One run in and do it and then the next go in and taste.

I used to freak out about my kids in a car in front of our rowhouse when I pulled up to unload groceries--do I leave kid in car in street---or do I bring him in and then get groceries.

The amount of time these kids were left alone in a car on a city street while 2 adults went to drink wine---so unacceptable on so many levels.

I'm sorry Cissie, court proceedings are not televised in the District of Columbia. You were free too Uber it down to 500 "C" Street to watch the action yourself. I'd guess they're probably home now taking 180ºF dual headed showers. The home atmosphere is probably comparable to The House of Usher.
