Fairfax 22030 still has some SFHs for under 600k. I was able to buy a nicely upgraded SFH with 4 BR, zoned to Frost/Woodson in 2013. I think things in this area are starting to go up though -- townhomes are now selling in the mid 600s around me.

I like being not too far from Mosaic District, Fairfax Corner, Patriot Center, etc. and there are buses to Vienna metro.

There are also homes in the neighboring zip code if 22309 near Mt. Vernon for under 600. Both areas are south of Old Town off GW parkway.

We live in Fort Hunt and you can still get a SFH, 3-4 bed with a great yard for 560-600 on the low end. Their are plenty of homes that are 700-the millions as well. It's a beautiful area and my commute to the Navy Yard is 40 mins if I leave at 715 and return at 6:00 pm. 22308 is the zip code.

We live in Capitol View Park (parts in SS, parts in Kensington) and just had two houses go near us for $550. Super close to Bethesda, where I work and where kids go to daycare, and also to DTSS. If you buy in someplace like Forest Glen or CVP, it makes things a bit easier. Parts of Rockville might work for you, too. But I think there's just not much inventory right now--that'll change soon.

Totally relate. $6k is our top too and we are not first time buyers - we are looking for our forever house. We are moving out to Olney.

Happy to see homes in that price range as well. We would definitely be open to SE DC, but schools pose a problem. We have special needs kids and sending them to private school while carrying a 500k mortgage wouldn't be an option. We have experienced decent services with the MCPS, but DC special education programs is a mystery to us.

We recently bought in 20002 as well. Eckington, Edgewood, Brentwood, parts of Brookland. . . We have no regrets.

My friend lived in the apartments in that neighborhood. I drove through there when I lived in park center. I always liked that neighborhood.

We've seen excellent appreciation in the 3 years we've lived here, the local elementary school is well-liked, there are nice walking trails nearby, and the commute to the Pentagon metro is easy with the buses. Downside is only minor walkability (library, Harris Teeter, Chipotle, burger place, a couple nice parks) and the middle school/high school isn't considered to be awesome.
