I (8:44) agree -- which is why I explicitly raised the nastiness and melodrama issues and distinguished them from the question of whether the phenomenon itself (teachers killing students' love of a subject) exists.
I think the phenomenon exists. How to re-train someone who exhibits these tendencies is a separate question.
If a student enjoys a subject, I don't believe one teacher can ruin/destroy it. I also believe generally it is a matter of parental melodrama that is really a complaint about a grade.
