Spence's new head of school is from Lakeside, basically a STEM powerhouse. It is a huge win if they want to keep pushing that path for girls. The matriculation numbers over last few years are impressive. The new head definitely knows what they're doing.

What is going on here? I cannot fathom a credible parent in New York spending this much time airing their grievances against their daughter's school. I understand putting out concerns, but at this point it's unhinged and, frankly, comes off as petty and ridiculous rather than a balanced perspective.

That said, Brearley was our top choice, and we are excited to enroll our daughter for Kindergarten this fall. We also considered Chapin and Dalton, but ultimately, Brearley won us over with its impressive new facilities and the strength of the LS curriculum. The “under one roof” setup at Chapin felt cramped, and the "STEAM lab" seemed more like a glorified woodworking space than a cutting-edge space for applied sciences. While Dalton’s upper school curriculum was appealing, we had concerns about the small size of the LS classrooms and became concerned after a close friend had to seek out additional math tutoring.

Anyway - our decision has been made. If there are any current Brearley families out there, I’d love to hear some positive stories about what’s to come. And to the other new families, looking forward to meeting you all!

I did not throw it out to you as an example of a great books curriculum. I was correcting your false statement that the history class has no text book. I simply said that was not true as I’ve seen the text book. I don’t know anything about the book. I was correcting your misstatement. You are really starting to sound unhinged. It’s unbelievable.

This is a review of the 2002 version; it's on like its 7th edition now and has been cleaned up and standardized in all sorts of ways, there's even a version aligned with the AP test. I have a 2024 e-book handy and Washington comes up 3 times, including a whole chapter section on "The North American War of Independence." Che Guevara is mentioned once, Carmen Miranda not at all.

I personally do appreciate you pouring your heart out even though it may seem overabundant here. I take it as an important data point. But we need to send our girls somewhere, and in the absence of concrete alternatives and concrete points of comparison with other specific schools, it becomes less actionable -- who is to say there is no equally unhappy parent at e.g. Spence or other reputationally good schools? We understand the things you are upset about at B; if you could speak to how those things are better at S, C, T, HM, or R etc, that would be helpful.

I am not on social media and didn’t spend almost anytime on the internet until a couple years ago when my daughter’s school got real weird all the sudden, and I had to spend my time becoming a curriculum and admin expert. The psych stuff is more worth attention than the curriculum. Finding out how much the pysvh department was involved in my kid’s day to day was upsetting and what I didn’t know then but know now (having now paid to talk to another child psych about the surveys and feelings work my daughter was doing without my permission). I have now found out it’s considered unethical and counterproductive for a therapist to operate with kids in this way. It’s not clear it’s legal, but I’m sure I signed all my rights away when I signed the contract.

At the very least, the efficacy of an SEL curriculum is disputed (the therapist recommended Bad Therapy by Abigail Shrier — check it out), but the biggest thing is that my daughter hates it, wants to spend more time doing academic work, and she has friends and has always been totally fine socially so it’s not a concern of mine. She’s never been in trouble for bullying and has always had friends. I asked to opt out and told no, part of why we decided to leave.

I pruned out anything that was repetitive or people calling me a liar and me responding in haste, back and forth about tiny curriculum points. I may not be right, but I am not a liar and have never really been called one before.

I think she’s making a good faith effort to self-correct. She’s also been receptive to your feedback about the repetitiveness and seems to have done some self-reflection (eg., comparing it to an ex you once loved but had a difficult breakup). You almost never see this in these anonymous forums as most are defensive and just double down. Give her a break. She’s a flawed human like all of us but at least she owns it.

In an act of good faith, I who made them am reporting the Bari Weiss and anything that is repetitive so the info is them clearer and easier to digest. I really do just want people to have the information. I don’t hate the school — it’s like a bad breakup with a person you once loved who you find out kept secrets from you and strung you along when you asked for clarity. I will see what i can do with admin.
