What I don't recall is Putin threatening the athletes to think twice before coming to the US and trying to get the Olympic Committee to ban their participation, as Trump has threatened Iranian athletes. And I would bet in the polymarket that you, too, do not remember such threats.

The point is that even authoritarian countries clean up their act for foreigners when they host elite sporting events. Trump doesn't seem to understand that. That is why foreigners are reluctant to travel to the US - even for the World Cup.

Trump being our president in a year we're hosting World Cup matches all over our continent is unfortunate and embarrassing but the World Cup will go on as scheduled and stadiums will be full of spectators. They've sold 80% of the ticket inventory which is indeed a little behind the pace of sales in previous World Cups but the exorbitant ticket prices are the obvious primary reason for this. Ticket prices are anywhere from 100% to 500% more expensive than they were in 2022. Unsold tickets will either be sold at their current prices or prices will drop before the tournament to meet demand but in either case, seats will be filled.

I don't doubt that Trump's authoritarian stances towards foreigners from many countries is a deterrent to some and that is indeed shameful but seats will inevitably be filled with a higher percentage of host country citizens due to ticket prices and travel costs that simply aren't affordable to many foreigners who may have trekked across the globe to attend previous World Cups. There aren't many people in less wealthy countries who are willing and able to spend 10k to 20k to come to North America to attend a handful of matches but those football lovers will passionately watch the tournament from afar without regard for the awful American leader.

The other hosts (Russia, Qatar) went out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Fans did not feel like their personal safety was at risk. As a foreigner who has had to deal with CBP in the Trump era, I do not feel safe crossing the border into the US.
