Is this wokeness coming from the faculty or student body? I envision Colgate students as likable bro and cool chick types.

I've always envisioned Hamilton as being much woker.

It's not very "woke". I'd say the difference is that Greek life is more predominant at Colgate. Also Colgate is more pre-professional. Both great places.

How would you rank these schools in terms of most to least woke: Bates, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Middlebury.

This would be for a strong student who's interested in SLACs but doesn't want woke and probably doesn't quite have the stats for WASPB.

All of these have a high proportion of wealthy private school kids, who are mostly liberal leaning. But I wouldn’t call that woke. Tbh it’s hard to find schools in 2026 where more than a small fraction of kids are politically engaged. So I wouldn’t worry about this.

Colgate has significant Greek life, D1 Athletics, and if feels like a more pre-professional environment. It is also about 50% larger than Hamilton. If you are familiar with the other NESCAC schools you could almost think of Colgate as a slightly larger, "burlier" Middlebury.

Hamilton is interesting because it is the merger of traditional Hamilton with Kenwood. Strong academics, great strengths in writing, and slightly isolated like most of the NESCAC schools.

Both are great options.

Colgate seems nothing like Middlebury, which has no Greek life and is pretty woke itself, if you remember the Charles Murray situation. If we're comparing to NESCACs, I would classify Colgate as a larger, more selective Trinity with D1 sports.

Nothing about Middlebury is "woke" beyond there being a group of naive kids existing at any school outside of Hillsdale, Jessup, and Liberty The Charles Murray situation is something constantly brought out by fools who have nothing but want to cry "woke". It was a nothingburger when it happened 9 years ago and it really isn't relevant to anything going on today. There are always going to be a few protesters anywhere if you are afraid of them you aren't very confident of your ideas.

AS someone with experience with both schools Colgate and Middlebury have significant similarities outside of Greek life.

But you be you....obviously ignorance is bliss in your case.

ok can you describe the similarities between colgate and midd please?

Different poster, but I also have some familiarity with both.

They're both on the larger side for SLACs (Colgate at 3,200 and Middlebury at 2,700, compared to under 2,000 at many peers).

Both have beautiful, hilly campuses in rural locations. There is some similarity to the campus aesthetic--lots of historic-looking gray stone buildings. Both are a quick walk into town, with Middlebury being slightly larger than the Village of Hamilton.

Both have a pre-professional slant, with many graduates going on to careers in finance, law, tech.

Both have wealthy student bodies.

Where they differ most: Colgate has frats and DI sports. Middlebury abolished frats in the early 90s and has a successful DIII program.

Where I live, the general perception is that Middebury is a bit more prestigious and benefits from its association with NESCAC. Colgate has a reputation for being a bit more of a party school.

Both are excellent colleges with great outcomes.

One other thing--although both are rural, Colgate feels a bit more isolated than Middlebury, at least to me. Upstate NY has a different feel/vibe than Vermont. It's a bit more run-down and depressing in the winter, although you'll find some similarly depressing places in Vermont. Vermont has a lot of wealth coming into the state in the winter due to the high-end ski areas. It just feels closer to civilization.

Middlebury is about an hour from Burlington, which is a fun town. Colgate is 40 mins from Utica and an hour from Syracuse. There's an Amtrak station in Middlebury that will take you to NYC, which is nice if you don't have a car.

How would you rank these schools in terms of most to least woke: Bates, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Middlebury.

This would be for a strong student who's interested in SLACs but doesn't want woke and probably doesn't quite have the stats for WASPB.

WASPB doesn't exist.....it is a figment of your imagination.

What is WASPB intended to represent?

Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona, Bucknell

Thanks!

Stop it with the WASPB. Bucknell doesn't need to be associated with WASP to demonstrate its greatness.
