There are always people asking for money outside the Target, just as people were asking for money when it was a Best Buy, and just as people were asking for money when it was Hechinger.

The people who think Tenleytown is dangerous are probably the same rubes who think anything busier than a cul-de-sac is a "busy road."

+1

NP here. I lived in that neighborhood in the 90's, when Hechinger was there, and frequented that Hechinger. It was a place I felt safe as a single woman, coming and going. It doesn't seem that way any more.

I am harassed and panhandled by very single day in DC. I just pray that the person doesn’t get aggressive but it’s no way to live. It happens all over city but getting out of metro and walking home and being harassed is the worst.

We have stopped going to the Cathedral Commons shopping center on Wisconsin Ave. Despite the location almost across from a police station, it’s impossible to go to Giant, CVS and other stores/restaurants without being harassed, accosted, yelled at by aggressive panhandlers. Although I have not seen actual drug use or transactions, some of the people who hang out there are moving about in a way that suggests they are in a drugged state.

We still go there. If people are being aggressive anywhere in the city, please call 311 for a wellness check. You don't need to give your name, just the location (intersection) of the person acting anti socially/erratically. No one is sent blazing in. It's a social services wellness check. Please please do this. Either they will get a wellness check every time, or they will move on. Don't let them stand in your nice shopping plaza and pull this antisocial crap without constant wellness checks.

The real estate sector is supposed to have the mayor’s ear. The owners of Cathedral Commons should be be calling her constantly because the criminal activity and general disorder — and the inability/inattention of the police to do anything about the situation — have put the Cathedral Commons investment into a downward spiral.

There is a major difference between real estate owners and developers. Developers have the mayors ear. Developers are local people who know how to facilitate zoning, approvals, construction, financing etc. When developers are done and the building is built, many will sell the building to an asset management company, REIT, etc. Those are not typically locally owned and are usually rather corporate. The mayor couldn’t care less what they think. Sometimes developers also own real estate portfolios, and that does make a difference. But generally speaking, once a building is built the mayor don’t care, because the folks that own it are from out of town, corporate entities with little to no local pull nor a willing to grease wheels like the local folks do.

I like how you put it - you have to pay for them to not harm you. I hate living like this.

Also, the Tenley CVS was just robbed by a flash mob AGAIN.

I remember being a young lady and it felt like 'walking the gauntlet' walking up from the Dupont Circle metro to home. Like a tax to get home. I trudged with my face down and shoulders tight. The panhandlers were extremely aggressive young men. Now I just roll my eyes when I see people handing out their hard earned money. I wish people would stop normalizing this extortion. Give to charity, pay your taxes, help your neighbor, but stop normalizing such an antisocial environment.

Will the vagrant who flashes customers in the bank vestibule try to stay? Maybe he’ll claim “tenant rights” to remain after the bank closes.

Your belief that preventing people from camping on public sidewalks is comparable to the holocaust is a pretty good demonstration of how far this city has fallen.

Is the solution to tolerate more and more disorder and deviancy, not just downtown anymore but in more DC neighborhoods as well?

THANKS, BOWSER!

Just drove by this. Found myself hoping for Trump to win for the first time so his National Park services appointees clear this out.

The Secretary of Interior is so focused on her performative indigenous posturing that she has lost sight of protecting the national perks, the Nation’s Crown Jewels and her department’s foremost mission.

They should move the homeless from DC parklands to spacious parks out west.

DC should create a fenced shelter and care facility on the unused RFK parking lots with security and a strict no drugs rule, with medical care and vocational training. Parks and streets are no place for vagrants. “campers.”

What a great idea to "concentrate" all the "campers" into one fenced area, patrolled by guards with strict rules. Surely this won't be problematic in any way or have terrible historical precedent.

Letting them loose in the city to wreak havoc everywhere and cause lasting, long-term harm through sex offenses against minors without repercussions doesn’t seem like such a great alternative.

No one is proposing 24/7 confinement. But clearly there would need to be some security fencing on the compound and monitored entrances, particularly at night to discourage crime, drug dealing/substance abuse and prostitution.
