They want your $ and saw you didn’t bite for the third team and somebody else probably declined 2nd team. One year they screwed my kid over and took a couple of bench warmers with loud mouth parents on next up and we declined so they scrambled and offered him a spot too. We declined that too because it said how they do business and kid wasn’t top choice. He went to a better team.

This happens especially if the numbers are close for forming the final team. We told a club that we didn't think a low team was worth the price they were charging and they upped the offer to the higher team. It was a small club that really needed people to take offers to have enough kids to field two teams.

But in pp's story, there are 4 existing teams, they declined 3 and were offered 2.

I have something crazier. My kid didn’t register or attend tryouts at current club and yet received an automated email saying they made the team. A few teammates that did register and attend both tryouts were demoted/cut from the team. The coach stressed how everyone needed to attend the tryouts. This is a club with multiple teams per age group/lots of kids at tryouts so they aren’t short on players and it’s a top team.

Was your kid like the star of the team?

DD had a coach whose philosophy was that if he selected a player and he was wrong about their ability, it was his fault not the kids. Everyone played. He was one of the best coaches that our kids ever had

Your child has a skill or position that the third team coach really needed, and maybe the second team already had players in that position. But rather than lose your business, they will sit your kid at the end of the second team bench.

Ugh, don't want that either. Not sure what to do.

So I emailed yesterday. No response.

Is your child at an age where there’s a minimum playing time for all kids? If so you wouldn’t need to be as concerned about sitting on the bench. Yes some will sit more than others but all will get decent playing time.

Our org only has playtime rules for rec.
Are there travel teams with required playtime?

Yes, for at least some sports there is a 50% minimum playing time rule under a certain age like 10 or 12 that is set by the sport’s governing body. So some kids play more than other but no one on the roster is a true benchwarmer. As it should be for that age.

What does "house league" mean?

Are you new to the country? It means recreational or rec league.

Unnecessarily rude. I’ve never encountered anyone IRL who calls it anything but rec.

NP. Seriously? Agree that this is a universal term and have heard it in all the sports my kids tried. Weird.

NP. I’ve never heard it called house baseball- only rec or Little League.

140 boys tried out for our Fairfax county public high school soccer teams (JV and Varsity).

If your child goes to a tiny private school, he might have a chance.

Wow, there are places with six teams! Or more than six teams? Who? Where?

Did your son get decent amount of play time in the higher team or was he kind of low man on the totem pole?

NP. We had a similar experience (only newcomer in a top team - was originally an alternate for top team and declined the lower team offer because it wasn't worth the extra driving). Our kid was the low man on the totem pole and got very little playing time the first half of the first year. Things got progressively better than second half of the year when they gave him more opportunities. The second year with the club was great with tons of playing time.

Yeah, I am concerned, its a stretch for us financially and to pay all that money and not play in the games would really suck. He is used to playing the whole game.

I absolutely get that. It is really expensive, and there was a long side convo a few pages ago about how it only makes sense to pay for travel if you’re on the first team, maybe second.

For us, second team is a good match because I know my kid has a lot of room for improvement. The hope is that he’ll work hard, get some good coaching, and be able to move to first team within a couple of years. If not, we’ll move on.

I'm paying for a lower level team, I think #6, because my kid wants the extra high level training to make the high school team. Plus without it, he is tearing up the carpet with his home training, so it might be saving money.

How old is he, where you are both thinking about high school and putting him on team 6?

Only kids on the first/and some second make the HS team. A ton of travel players are cut each year.

Why are you reading the 17th page on a thread about sports tryouts, then?

Because my kid is trying out?
