There are a lot of private schools in NYC with wealthy parents, but only a handful have these ridiculous college placements.

On a per capita basis, Brearley must have the best college placement of any school in the country. There have been very recent years where 25% of the class goes to HYP alone, and basically everyone going somewhere excellent.

You do have to take it with a grain of salt because many are indeed legacy, major donors, celebrity kids etc. But the unconnected kids also do well.

Also, while it can be very hard for unconnected kids to get into some of these schools for kindergarten, things do open up and get more meritocratic by the later years. By the time you get to high school, I think it's a minority of students who've been there since the beginning.

SJP's son even applied to colleges as a first gen student. The audacity! A friend's child is at Brown with him and says he is hands down the dumbest person on campus. (As opposed to the Thurman/Hawke child, who they said was legitimately smart, creative, and talented.)

Tina Fey's daughter goes to Brearley.
Olive Kopelman (Drew Barrymore kid) is homeschooled.
Suri Cruise goes to Avenues.

I mean...it is highly unusual to be the child of two famous actors...but when they ask you to check the box asking if either parent attended college, well he answered honestly. Was he supposed to check the box, but then add comments? I doubt he received any special consideration as a 1st gen college student (considering his name)...though I am sure his "child of star status" garnered its own category.

Not sure why it matters if famous actors (or rock stars) go to college. Agreed they are not the wealthiest or influential...however, let's face it...almost nobody cares about some hedge fund guy as a person (unless maybe they are like Ackman and have a large social media following in their own right), but tons pay attention to the stars. Katie Holmes sent her kid to Avenues (not sure if still do)...which gave Avenues tons of free advertising and attention that it otherwise probably would not have received.

Annie Leibovitz’s children were on another nyc school senior insta page - very good colleges. Celebrity crowd does well with college admissions even if the parents have a no name degree.

Right?! I look at where Christie's is advertising their sales and it's always singapore and HK. I went to college with guy from HK and he bought his wife a 1+ million emerald ring and it was not her engagement, just cocktail. We're not very old.

My kids go to one of the NYC privates and like us there ar other Indian families where parents came here for Masters in engineering then got an MBA from one of the top schools. We have all worked for many years on Wall Street and are sending our kids to these schools. My husband and I came to the US on full scholarships and were indeed middle class in India. While some of our Indian friends were wealthy in India most are like us.

Either way, NYC takes wealth to a new level over most of the elite DCUM private day schools. These are the people paying $100K for SAT test prep and another $100K for a college counselor starting in 8th grade. There are plenty of $50-60K+ day schools in NYC area and majority of those kids goal is elite universities, with many getting in. Hard not to have the right resume when you started preschool on 3rd base (at a $50K/year preschool) and all the help/assistance possibly needed during the next 15+ years.
