It’s astounding that this is a revelation for people. It’s all about class, not identity and yet even the OP frames the obvious class distinction around ethnicity and identity. There can be no better example of how utterly tone deaf some people can be. Democratic party leaders need to wake up to this glaring truth sooner than later or else we are truly without hope.

The phenomenon of "new" whites or "white adjacents" being more racist than Lilly whites is well-known and nothing new.

The Mayflower was a LONG time ago and the populations you are describing have been in the US for 100-150 years.

If you read about the history of some places, these things have gone in waves. First it was mostly Anglo settlers, then a lot of Germans, and so on. In Pennsylvania's coal country there are lots of stories about who came and who then looked down on who - English, then Welsh mining engineers, then Irish laborers and so on, each rising a bit in class and then looking down on the next wave of immigrants to follow - the italians, and then the slovaks, poles, hungarians and so on. The more recent replace the others on the lowest rung of this unspoken caste system. That's still reflected in many parts of the country.

And unlike the D"s does next to nothing for domestic manufacturing. Historically the R's love to get rid of anything resembling worker safety legislation. It seems like they mostly just change the conversation to these emotional culture war issues which overide self-interest.

And democrats haven't seen a steel mill or a coal mine that they didn't want to regulate out of existence. That's before we get to NAFTA (kind of surprising that the party who is supposedly pro-labor is also the anti-protectionist party) or non-economic issues
