+100 The loiterers used to be families with toddlers and grandparents in tow, using the book slides and strolling the walk areas. They were not acting obnoxious in public, much less stealing anything.

It's interesting to me that so many people are pulling the race card and coming down on the cops. So then, what happens with the groups congregating and stealing from the mall departments stores? The reason this escalated is because the situation has been ignored because no one wants to be called racist because it's predominately African Americans from DC. Security officers and the police have been narrowly averting large scale looting like we've seen in recent videos of CVS stores, luxury department stores, etc. because of their presence. Do we just keep ignoring this theft while disempowering the police to do anything about it? Ridiculous. I support the police.

Nobody is ignoring theft or “disempowering” the police. It is and has always been illegal to steal. In fact this man was being chased by cops who were working that beat right at that very moment.

I missed that part. Just face it: FFX police blew this guy away in a trigger happy fit and now they're trying to weasel out of it. While the racists run their mouths and try to blame the victim. Stay classy, NOVA racists.

I'm so tired of the rich white ladies in DC and Arlington living in their million dollar houses having experienced zero to no crime in their lives telling the rest of us how we should feel sorry for criminals. When have you EVER had to experience real crime and violence? Have you been scared for your life? Probably not. You live a safe life cushioned by money so you get to be a keyboard warrior and talk about how everyone else is a racist while hoarding generational wealth for yourself. If not PP directly, I can tell you that there is a HUGE number of DC liberals that fit this bill.

Have any of you had a family member shot by a criminal? Have you sat in the hospital with your mother consoling her as she cried over your sibling who was recovering from gun shot wounds? If you have not experienced that, you can seriously back off with this poor criminal BS. You have no idea the impact crime has on the lives on victims and their families. My SIL experienced something similar when her father was shot in the stomach when his store was robbed at gun point by a criminal. He luckily survived after weeks in the hospital. Did your family live in neighborhoods with bars on the windows? I've been held up at gun point twice. It is terrifying. My DH grew up in a civil war, lost his family members, and experienced terror that you will never know. And you know what we have never done? ROBBED PEOPLE. Committed crimes. There is no excuse for it. I don't care what neighborhood or families these criminals come from. Stop excusing it. And call me a racist all you want, but I am Hispanic and grew up in a Hispanic town. Most people think the way I do.

I'm over the this crying for criminals while conveniently forgetting the trauma that they inflict on the rest of us. It's such a rich lady thing to do. But pat yourself on the back for your "tolerance".

I agree with you completely.

This. First gen here. Our family came here with less than nothing, didn't speak the language, but we knew not to rob anyone, and to actually get a job and pay taxes, like most civilized humans are expected to do. You are expected to contribute in a positive manner to society. Period. Not rob, or so much as bother anyone. Not one soul. GTFOH with how "hard" you think your life is.

Fact. I am going to drop a box of donuts tomorrow for Fairfax police officers.

This guy was an addict and a career criminal. He had two kids, with two different baby mamas, which he was not supporting in any way from jail. Dude was out of jail on a parole violation, and he thought that it would be a good idea to drive to VA to steal a pair of designer sunglasses, and then run from the cops to avoid being apprehended. The world is a safer place without this loser and the taxpayers will no longer have to pay for his frequent prison stays. And, his mother, who clearly did an awesome job raising such a fine young man is going to get rich when she sues the County, which she is clearly gearing up for.

So addicts, career criminals, guys with different baby mamas, and guys who don't support their kids should all be shot to death? Because that covers a whole lot of people, including lots of white guys.

If they’re running from the cops, are perceived to be a threat, and have a violent criminal history, then my answer is a resounding YES.

So you're basically endorsing extra-judicial killings.

In light of the soft on crime bs that seems to be the norm these days, yes I am.

Everyone knows that unless you lived in Memphis, the best way is to not commit crimes and to not run from or resist the police

Running from the police isn't a crime punishable by death. Get real: the FFX police got trigger happy and blew this dude away and now they're actively covering it up.

Unless this guy had a gun on him, there's no reason for police to murder him pre-trial.

After learning of his violent history, I applaud the cops. No more of this soft on crime BS that would have had him right back out in the streets. It’s gotta stop somewhere.

All the articles mention "his violent history," but the public has not been given details about it yet so I will reserve judgement on that until details come out--none of you know any more about his criminal history than the rest of us. But he wasn't acting violent at the time he shoplifted the sunglasses, was he? That's what matters. Sounds like the same talk we hear every time a black man is killed by the cops--i.e., they're criminals so it's appropriate that they were killed. Murdered for trying to pass a suspected $20 counterfeit bill (George Floyd), murdered on the basis of suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps (Eric Garner), executed for stealing sunglasses. Shouldn't the punishment be proportionate to the crime?

Right. So he’s right back out on the street with this sawed off shotgun. Makes sense.

At some point, the totality of his life/crimes should be what matters.

A judge and/or jury can look at the totality of his crimes when he appears in court--but that never happened. And regarding his past crimes, he wasn't brandishing a sawed-off shotgun at the time he was being pursued, was he? You make it sound like it's okay for cops on the street to execute perps based on the "totality of their life/crimes." Maybe in developing countries, but not here.

His mama is mad that the police killed him. Why isn't she mad that her DC is a violent criminal who lived by the gun and died by the gun?

She can be both. Unconditional love is not uncommon.

In the WaPo article, she said that he never owned a gun despite his conviction for felony weapons charge. She’s either insane or willfully misrepresenting her son’s history

Owing and been in possession of the weapon are two different things, so maybe she is right.
