The cape is part of the dress — she didn’t take it off. The “bare arms” squeals came from the forearms peeking from under the cape. More ridiculous headlines used against MM and no one else (similar to the OMG! They’re holding hands!! cry).

I don’t think she looks trashy, I was just making a comment about her fashion choice. I’m also one of those people who thinks women should only wear closed-toe shoes to the office. Exactly. People look at Meghan and think "what can I criticize about this." They look at other members of the royal family and look for things to praise. It's really transparent.

She’s wearing a black calf length dress with a high neck that does not fit very close to her body. Cocktail dress? Because you can see her forearms? You’re on crack.
I honestly think part of the issue here is that unlike most of the royals except Kate, MM is a young(ish), attractive, stylish woman. She shows them up looks wise just by showing up. She had to learn to dress as a young working actress with minimal access to stylists (she would not have been able to afford them until the last few years if her career). She us naturally very beautiful and knows how to wear clothes to make herself look good. Most of the royals don’t. She looks amazing and they look okay so she gets criticized for “breaking protocol” but the rules are very selectively enforced against her out of spite.
You say this but she has had VERY unfortunate outfits in the last couple of years. The loose drapey pink pantsuit in NYC, the red ballgown with weird bustline that looked like she stuck two soapdishes to her chest, the white trousers with weird pleats...Meghan is on record as saying she styles herself as this was "one of the last things she had control over", but the downside of that is you have no one to tell you when something you picked doesn't work, and you begin to rely on wishful thinking rather than on cold hard looks in the mirror.
I don't know of this drapey pink pantsuit you speak of, but I know the red ballgown and the Brandon Maxwell pleated pants and neither were a fashion misstep. That dress had a slightly weird bustling but was an absolutely stunning color on her with this magnificently dramatic train -- the photos from that event were fantastic and she looked great. The pleated pants are perfectly on trend and she has the figure to pull them off, plus they were well styled with a cut away tank and perfectly hemmed (which is often where wide-leg pants go wrong). She looked great.
She takes more chances with her fashion than, say, Kate, but that's a weird comparison anyway because EVERYONE takes more chances than Kate. MM doesn't always look perfect but she nails it about 99% of the time even when dressed casually and given how much she is photographed, that's really, really impressive. People can say what they will about Meghan Markle but she absolutely knows how to dress and that is more than can be said of the vast majority of the British Royal Family. These are not fashion people and the ones who do best (Kate, the Queen, Anne, Sophie) are the ones who accept that and instead stick to safe, traditional, unimpeachable (but also uninspired) clothes that are unlikely to draw negative attention. Meghan takes chances and makes them work. That is very hard to pull off at that level. Look at how Beatrice tries so hard at it and, even grading on a curve, often looks foolish.

Yees, her face was darker and she had a lot of eye makeup on. KM's makeup was really well done imo.
Some of the makeup and outfits photographed better than others. Kate looked completely impeccable and regal and her children were just precious. Deeply feeling, well behaved, normal healthy kids. Kate’s makeup photographed really beautifully- she is aware of her place in history. So thankful she is there for William.

Thank you for posting this -- she does in indeed look fantastic. I think that's just the style for hats right now, to be honest. Kate and Meghan have both worn similar styles multiple times for Trooping the Color and Jubilee -- I think it's a bit of a response to the really elaborate Philip Treacy hats that were been so popular for so long. People have been going for more streamlined, simple hat silhouettes the last few years. I actually like the style more than the ridiculously elaborate shaped fascinators that were so in vogue for a time, even if this one is a little flat. I still prefer it to most of the other headwear at the funeral -- much of it was pure fug.

No, it varies a lot by person. Camilla and Kate almost certainly have staff stylists trained in protocol who work directly with designers and ensure everything is right. Beatrice and Eugenie, as working royals, likely have a budget for styling but I doubt it’s coordinated at Buckingham in the same way and they probably have more control over what they wear. They are also under significantly less scrutiny than the Queen Consort or the Princess of Wales.
Fergie has to pay her own way and is cash strapped. Likely she got some donated services and perhaps clothes from people she’s worked with in the past, or splurged. But no, she isn’t getting a stylist and dresser like Kate has.
The foreign royals have help like the most senior British royals and also have wardrobes that likely contain clothing appropriate for a funeral of a head of state on hand anyway. It’s literally part of their job.
Meghan is unusual because she’s under extreme scrutiny (more even than Camilla) but as a non-working royal and outsider she does not get a clothing budget and must pay for her own styling. I’m sure she has a stylist or two but don’t work for the royal family and thus can’t/won’t coordinate in the same way and may not be as schooled in, or feel as much adherence to, royal protocol and tradition. I am guessing that the palace cleared Meghan’s outfit for the funeral though, in some capacity, because of how tightly controlled this even was. Plus all the hubbub over what Harry would wear since he was not allowed to be in uniform for the funeral itself— there must have been some communication.
But I could be wrong about that even. H&M stayed separate from the BRF while in London and it sounds like communication was strained. They were originally invited to a reception for foreign dignitaries before the funeral but then found out from the press that it had been limited to working royals only. So maybe Meghan was totally on her own style wise, who knows. The earrings she wore were a gift from the queen, not leant (as Kate’s jewels were) so she might have just made those decisions on her own, with the help of whoever she employs to help with clothes.

I’m not surprised at all that she dresses herself. The best she has EVER looked- and she looked fantastic- was when she was pregnant with Archie. Nearly every outfit was flawless. She must have had a stylist and she must have had a lot of tailoring due to her pregnancy. And I imagine she was getting a lot of advice since these were royal engagements. Whatever the formula, that’s what she needs to start doing again!

I am hardly the arbitrator of what is appropriate but I thought Bea’s short skirt was the worst offense in terms of too much showing. Flared and short doesn’t seem right for a state event.

The headband was RIDICULOUS, especially for the wife of the leader of the free world. Zara Tindall’s hat was of the fascinator genre and wasn’t the best look, either. I haven’t seen that mentioned here.
I actually liked Jill’s headband better than Zara’s hat. I don’t know if it was appropriate or not but I didn’t really mind how it looked. Zara I like and admire but she seems like she dresses herself if that makes sense. Like she’s maybe not a fashionista (though she seems incredibly fun)
