I'm not upset about it. Just pointing out another example and how vested interests could have played a role in shaping or maintaining the current rules. The kid was also a double all-star last year after coming back to summer swim following his freshman year at college. As others have pointed out that just doesn't seem right for a league that everyone says is supposedly just for fun. A coach maybe, but a 19 year old about to be a college sophomore taking opportunities from high school kids .. really?


While I think it is silly to change the June 1 date because it is used by so many swim leagues around the country for sake of ease and it was the rule for most of the time NVSL has been in existence, I do agree college swimmers should not come back after their freshman year. A quick google search shows that leagues have language in their rules to prevent this from happening. This is the proposed rule change people should be after.

Regardless of their age, swimmers may not compete in the league after the summer following their graduation from high school.


So the redshirted kid gets to compete? And my kid who spent all his life being the youngest in his grade is out?

Little League is a relatively short season too but they changed their age date cutoff for many of the same reasons cited here. Also see article below. Now, a 11 year old can transition from WSLL in mid June and become a 10 year old in NSVL. Kids who play multiple sports pick up on these things quickly and wonder what’s up too.

Thank you for posting this. This is helpful context. My kid would definitely benefit by having the old kids move out of her age group but, who cares. I am pro keeping the current system. It seems to be the one everyone uses and easiest for a short summer league.

If the date is changed to August 1st you'll have the exact same problem, but in reverse. You will have kids who are 8 for every single meet of the season swim in the 9/10 age group (birthday July 31st). That is somehow better?

The switch to actual age was in place from at least 2004 through 2011. That's not exactly a quick change of course.


True, but since this is the first year I can recall parents going all in on a bunch of kids born in June and July, I am going to assume that most parents of the 18,000 swimmers haven't been silently furious for the past decade since it was changed back to the age cutoff that was in place for decades in NVSL and across the country.

I think that this is one of 2 things:

1. Parents of club swimmers who are upset some club kid who just turned 9 over the summer beat their kid.

2. Parents of clubs swimmers who are upset some nonclub kid who just turned 9 over the summer beat their kid which obviously should never happen because the club kid has been training all year to win all the things in the summer recreational swim league.



Or there are actually 10 people on this website fighting over this topic and 3000 people not wasting their time and enjoying summer swim. I think once in a while you might check how many people actually visit this forum before assuming it represents some sort of popular view. Alternative 3. There’s a counter right on the forum list page. It’s not high.

This has been a topic discussed (but not in the DCUM way) by parents at our pool for years. It’s more been a situation where some kid cleans up in an age group (usually a younger age group) and everyone goes wow that kid is really something, and then people find out well that kid is actually an 11 year old club swimmer dominating the 9/10 group, and then everyone says oh that makes sense and goes on about their business. I know club parents get a bad rap, but at least on our team the club parents don’t seem to care about summer swim as much, there were club kids that skipped a meet because they were working to qualify for LC champs, or skipped the meet the weekend of LC champs.


This topic came up at our pool last summer when our entire 8&u girls relay team was 9. I'm sure it'll be the same next year when our 9-10 girls are 11, unless someone actually does put forth a rule change for an August 1 date.

He's swimming at Amherst College now. No doubt propelled by the confidence he gained by crushing 9yo's as an 11yo in summer swim back in 2014.
