our economy depends on having labor not dependent upon a college degree. not everyone can or should go to college. people don't want to acknowledge that, but it's true. now there are millions of people who did get to go to college and earn their degrees (which lenders can't "repossess") but they want taxpayers to take on that burden and pay the tab? So others who either paid their own way or chose not to go to college are supposed to take on that debt? Nope. I'm a Dem, but based on Biden's performance thus far together with the whininess of people advocating for government giveaway policies like this, I would count on the house going to the GOP next year and then all this talk about loan forgiveness will be even further removed from reality.
The house is already going to the GOP because of perceived "woke policies" and attacks on education. Student loan forgiveness is an attempt to obtain a voting base based on economics rather than racial grievance etc. Even if forgiveness doesn't happen, the payments are going to remain at zero. You're not going to get Millennials and GenZ out to vote for Democrats when student loans come due before/during midterms. It's like a farm subsidy at this point where lots of people don't like it but it's too much trouble to get rid of it.
Cool. Well we are rich but I will definitely be having my kids take out the full stafford allotment since Uncle Sam will be paying the tab forever according to you.
+1 DS is a sophomore in college, and we would never have qualified for subsidized stafford loans, only unsub, but DS's loans have been interest-free anyway in the years since he took them out due to the pause. Great investment.
It's been a great investment for everyone with student loans and is a major reason why savings rates went up in the US. It's very interesting that the only fiscally conservative issue in the media is opposing student loan forgiveness and it's not gaining much traction. Guess that platform really is dead after the Trump administration.

The problem is that I see people cite that rent is too expensive and that that’s why they can’t pay their loans, and then they quote the average studio apartment rent in a world class city. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is entitled to live in DC, SF, NYC, LA, wherever. Areas change quick (see Bozeman and Austin). Get roommates and/or move and stop effing making excuses. I hope those people know there are areas where rent is literally $750/month. In the age of remote work there’s no excuse. Go become a dental hygienist, a carpenter, a nurse or even get a full-time job at an Amazon warehouse for a couple years. There are areas where you can buy a house for $60,000 and renovate it for $15,000.

yep, so let's work on raising the minimum wage and ensuring that non-college jobs are bearable/sustainable/will yield a decent life. pretending that everyone deserves to go to college is absurd.
