Peak Hours??? 3:30-5:30 pm. Looks like Hardy can use the field during school. Lots of false info being spread by the Hardy crowd.

They all have a chip of their shoulder because Hardy will never be Deal.

Maret has a chip on its shoulder because it doesn’t like people pointing out that it can’t afford a field of its own like the top tier DC private schools can.

How about Maret practice at Ellington then! (and convert their own parking lot to a baseball field also) Or find a less privileged neighborhood they can go buy out ... since that seems to be their strategy (now that the area around Jellef is aware of the deal & pushing back)...

Yeah, why not ? Maret then could pay to renovate a second major DC asset because the District’s leaders are wasting the tax money instead on crony consultants and sham 8a contracts.

Umm... what sports teams practice or play games during school hours? Maybe Maret should have their sports teams practice during school hours or at midnight.

They have classes during school. After school is when sports teams play and practice. Let's turn it around: why can't Maret just use the field during the day and let Hardy use it after school? Wouldn't that solve everything?

If Hardy needs another field then they can move their booty a couple of blocks down the street to Ellington.

A PP recommended that Hardy could build a much larger field on its own site. I walked by there on Friday and there is definitely room to reconfigure the site for a bigger field with a track.

Have you not read the articles about the community opposition to expanding use of Ellington? I imagine not, since Maret parents are pretending not to have read the umpteen articles about community opposition to their backroom deal to hog a public park.

A little perspective. Roughly 75% of the kids in DC as classified as "economically disadvantaged," which means they qualify for free lunch. The income cutoff varies depending on household size, for a household of two -- single parent with one child -- it's around $30K, and for a household of 5 it's in the mid 50's.

Among DC schools, Hardy is one of the more affluent, only 40% of the kids there are economically disadvantaged.

At Maret, financial aid is available for students whose family's household income is below a certain threshold. For a family with one child in private school that threshold is about $225,000, for families with more children it's higher. Three quarters of the students at Maret do not receive financial aid and their families pay the full $39,000 tuition. Financial aid is awarded on a sliding scale based on need, according to Maret's website the average family on financial aid pays $12,000 per year for tuition.

Now, while these numbers are incomplete, they do paint a picture. I will stipulate that no family who is categorized as "economically disadvantaged" can afford to pay $12,000 a year, per child, for tuition. Most of them in fact would be hard-pressed to pay anything. While the Maret community is generous with financial aid, the typical recipient of financial aid is far wealthier than the typical child in DC. If 40% of the kids at Hardy are economically disadvantaged I would also stipulate that the average kid isn't going to be that much better off. There aren't any publicly-available numbers about the economic status of the kids who use Jelleff aftercare, but i would suspect they are mostly typical of the city as a whole.

While almost certainly there are some Hardy families or even B&GC families who are better off than the poorest Maret families, what is undeniable is that the typical families at Hardy, the B&GC and the city as a whole are far, far less affluent than the scholarship kids at Maret -- and those are the "poor" kids.

This deal would still be wrong even if both communities were equally affluent, what really runs counter to Maret's stated values is that they are taking resources from communities that are far less fortunate than themselves.

+1. But the Maret families won’t ever understand that there are other underprivileged people in this city who could be using a Jelleff. All they care about is that if they keep their costs low at $95,000/year for Jelleff they won’t have to pay a higher tuition that would be necessary if they paid a market price for a fuel. So they can buy more Chanel handbags!

Excellent. Only the Maret kids whose parents pay DC taxes can use Jelleff. Guess the Md and Va residents can’t be on Maret teams. That will free up at least half of the Jelleff field for actual DC kids. Good idea.

+1. 40% of Maret’s student body come from MD and VA and their parents aren’t paying DC taxes (similar to Maret with its nonpayment of property taxes.)

Maret boosters are just hopeless. The vapid, tone-deaf, self-contradictory arguments just keep coming. I’m not sure exactly what their goal is here, but they look worse and worse as this thread grows.

Who was “Jelleff”? Let’s just name it Maret Field — or the Jack Evans Sports Center if you prefer.
