On protected list unless they're released, which will happen to many players at u16 since there is no u17 team. Then they're free to go to whichever academy wants them.

Academies can only protect 45 players. The rest can be recruited from spring of u14 and later. New academy generally pays $10k for each year the player was at the original academy to reimburse for training. If a player is released they are free to go to whatever academy they want.

It's a hard pill to swallow to dish out $10k for an online education that hasn't be confirmed to be on par with a free public education, more less a private education. That's probably the final nail on the coffin and driver behind some players' departure.

I think the person means on a "blocked list" where DCU doesn't want the player but prevents the player from going on trial with other academies. If any academies really wants the player, they may have to pay DCU. DCU playing dirty in this case...more reason to stay away.

Are you referring to the protected list? They can only put 9 players on that.

Protected vs blocked...why and how does it benefit the player? Either way, it prevents player movement and not in the best interest of player development and the player achieving their dream. DCU hasn't developed or spent $1 on the player to lay any claim on him. Let the player go if DCU isn't interested imo.

So at the same time, how are players also not allowed to go to other academies?

This question is out of pure curiosity, my kids are u-littles and likely not going to be in a position to be put on a protected list.

It’s my understanding that if a player lives in the territory of an mls academy, a different mls academy cannot recruit/sign them until February of u14. The protected list appears to start at u15. So is there a time lapse between when an outside mls academy could sign a player and when the home territory mls academy could place the player on a protected list?

U13 and under football doesn't really matter. The kids haven't really hit puberty and so much will change in the coming years with their development both physically and mentally. That said, the clubs start protecting kids in Feb of u14. So after the fall season of u14. If you're not on the protected list and want to go somewhere before then you can. The window is fall of u14 and before. Or not being visible enough for the homegrown club to protect the player. This is harder if you have a truly strong player because the community is small.

Would you ever send your child to a school that doesn't really care whether they learn something and has a proven track record of students regressing in their system, has no money to even improve the school's conditions or environment, has teachers that are under qualified for their jobs, has leadership that doesn't care about the school or it's future, and charges you a significant amount for an inferior curriculum? That is the equivalent to DCU.

Been in youth soccer for over 10 years. Everything I see and hear about DC United makes me cringe.

Right, the DCU parents aren't upset at all about having spend 10k on school now. Nor are they upset about the basics that every academy provides but somehow DCU doesn't. Seems you should mind your own business if it doesn't affect you.

I've read the thread. All I see is one or two people trying to defend DCU against attack but with no real arguments or evidence. But I see a lot of evidence that DCU is not a strong academy.
