Hindsight is 20/20. The cops surely see a lot of nervous, apologetic people. They did their job and separated the two to cool down for the night. They listened to Gabby, but they aren’t psychologists, social workers, or psychics. There are limits to what they are allowed to do, especially since Brian was the one sporting scratches, and Gabby didn’t in fact “cry for help.”

But at the same time, how much of that behavior including the over apologizing is typical for a white male of his age and station in life in Utah.

Would they really have thought anything additional of it?

Her only chance would have been had she wanted to get out. She still didn’t. Even at that stop. Or did, but felt trapped. She didn’t die that night, she dies 10-14 days later.

She was 22, not married, no kids - no real commitment yet. May be if one of them was put in jail, that would have interrupted their toxic journey. But even if the police gave her the hotel and the van, Brian would have been there the next day or two or three days later all sweet, telling her how everything was her fault.

Her only chance was to stop her journey, ask a parent to fly in and take the van and go with her. The problem, she may have thought it’s too much trouble for a parent, or as many 22 year olds think that she can handle it herself.

It is apparent now that Gabby was in a lot more distress than the first body cam video showed.
She even looks to be having a panic attack.

She is paralyzed w/genuine fear when told that she will be alone for the night.
And who wouldn’t be??
A frail, young Female alone out in an unfamiliar desert w/no water & little money.
It was entirely up to her to find a place to park the van out in the vast desert for the evening.
She didn’t know a single person in the area….
She was a perfect target for a roaming pedophile.

It’s irresponsible, and downright evil to take the side of whoever is having the biggest reaction. Teachers often take the bully’s side because of it.

The police did what they could with the information they had.

I didn’t watch the whole clip, but the officer who explained about how some relationships can be bad for your soul…

Brian was acting like the entire situation was simply a hiccup in his day.
He even mentioned he still hoped to take a hike.

He was smiling while hamming it up w/the police - cracking stupid jokes like he was going to steal one officer’s radio so he could be the one to go to jail.
Brian was given a decent option by the cops, for him to take the van for the night and let Gabby be the one to stay the night in a hotel.
All he had to do was front some money for the hotel and Gabby would get security for the evening and would be safe.
Brian never took that option claiming that he was “low on funds.”

He was holding out in the hopes that the cops would offer HIM a free hotel stay since they had already told him that he was the victim in the scenario.
He was milking the victim role for all it was worth.

And when the cop told him “You did nothing wrong…..” even though they had known that a witness made a statement of seeing him strike her.
And Gabby did appear to have a scratch on her face too.
But due to her distress/crying and the mere fact that Brian’s injuries were worse, he made out w/his own hotel room for the evening.
The authorities never photographed Gabby’s injury.

Seems they already made up their mind who’s side they were on. 🤨
