High achieving child, loves academics and sports, also very social. Takes Mandarin in middle and wants to continue in high school.

Atheist family/ not interested in Catholic school.

Lives in NW dc but willing to travel to Maryland.

Interested in a small, college prep environment but ideally down to earth NOT pretentious school with cliquey, only extreme wealthy and lack of values.

I am afraid there is no such school available. Maybe Field school? But how can a school charge $50K and not be pretentious? That is not possible.

This. Do not set your heart on the "perfect fit" only to be disappointed!

LOL why does this bother you? Because you were told to believe in a boogyman in the sky?

Nope that’s not it at all. I don’t really believe myself tbh. It’s just so unnecessarily aggressive and ironically sanctimonious of you to bring it up. Like who gives a shit?

If a school is good and there’s a little religion who cares. Your kid can deal with it. It’s called pluralism and acceptance and not being an a$$hole about everything.

If someone doesn't want to send their kid to a school with "a little religion", it's their choice when it comes to private. And no, "a little religion" is just as harmful as a lot. No religion at all would be best for the bogeyman in the sky.

WIS would be by far the best fit for your son. The upper school campus is located in NW DC, lots of families there speak Mandarin, the school has some excellent sports teams and has just invested in a new science building, and the children who attend do not come from extreme wealth.

Yuying is elementary school.

WIS- I know a family that both children speak/write excellent Mandarin. One lived/studied in China during college.

I'm a NP, but I fear you don't even know what religion (any one of them) are about or for if this is your impression.

St. Andrew's could be a good fit. They are around 750 students (preschool - 12). The religion aspect is light. Lots of students of other faiths/no faith. Sports are decent, and they have Mandarin classes.

If Basis McLean is on the menu then Potomac is probably the better option for a sporty kid.

OP said NW DC, willing to go to MD. So neither Basis nor Potomac is what they are looking for.

Agree Basis is not a good fit if athletics are important in addition to academics, however.

OP, depending on where in NW, Potomac could be pretty close and closer than a lot of the MD schools. If you are in palisades, georgetown, foxhall, etc, then i'd definitely look at it b/c it ticks all your boxes. The bus service is great, too. You could do a shuttle to NW or a neighborhood bus to NW.

Why even comment if you don't bother reading the OP's question? So much ignorance in this comment.
