On either side, it’s just an “opinion” on whether or not it can be used, it’s not clear cut yes or no… context matters.

Years ago, Whoopi defended this on The View. She thinks that she has the "right' to use the word and gave her reasons. Okay. But, as long as the word is in the music and the AA community, it will still exist.

I haven't heard the recording. From the description it sounds like the woman was upset and reporting it--so I do not think her motive was wrong. She also sounds a little clueless about political correctness.

So, do Black kids get in trouble for using it?

This is nuts. Saying the word, in any context, is problematic for teachers. Even if you’re just conveying another kid said it, DONT REPEAT THE WORD ITSELF. Everyone knows what you mean if you just reference it. It’s never ever ever required to say the word to report its usage. But then to get into a back and forth about how you should be allowed to say it adds fuel to the fire. Just idiot judgment but this kind of thing happens so much more frequently than you’d assume.

My kid's 2nd grade teacher (elementary in same pyramid) did something incredibly similar, though without doubling and tripling down. We as parents were shocked and explained to our kid that a person can't say the word in any context. At the same time, we were kind of glad it never turned into a big thing. It was a dumb mistake by the teacher, but it was a mistake.

Doesn’t sound so innocent. She used it repeatedly.

The teacher should be fired.

As a first year teacher, I was on the playground (first grade) with another older, and very dignified Black teacher. We saw a kid do something wrong and she said, "that child is nothing but a n*****" I guess I looked shockedand she looked at me and said "I can say that--you can't."

At a very young age, I was taught that you never say that, but it shocked me that she would. This was many years ago.

I still think the word should be dropped by all. But, it is used widely in some music, etc. It needs to go.

Never get why people get fired up over names.

I think we all should know not to say The Word. And if we have said it somehow and are corrected, even if by a middle schooler saying "bro, you can't SAY that!" we should respond with an apology and a promise to do better.
