It is not a crime to be poor.

And not everyone can afford insurance you know.

While I was waiting for my hot yoga class to start (I was the teacher) I saw someone back into my car. She took off. I chased her down the street barefoot and in my sports bra, and got her license plate and called the police. She came back twice to drive by and look at my car for damage. Then she came back and stayed and by that time the police had arrived. She had insurance but I think panicked.
At any rate, the damage (not extremely evident but you could tell) came to $5270. I had a rental for four weeks until the part came in and the repairs could be done. I was PISSED as hell. Inconvenient and she should have stopped right then and there.
Very hard to then teach my class as I could see what was transpiring outside.

+1 we have 3 cars from very old to brand new and no paper or pen in any who needs to actually write anything down anyways nowadays

This is a ridiculous excuse when you can go into the gym and get some.

it’s cute you actually believe she had insurance

To answer your question…….a terrible person, someone very self-centered as well as inconsiderate ➕ disrespectful. 😠

Good for you OP for getting the license plate no.#!

For those saying it's no big deal, it's happened to me three times for total our of pocket of around $14-1500 plus time and inconvenience. It would be way more now with inflation.

25 years ago dent cost $950

20+ years ago smashed tail light was around $250

7-8 years ago someone broke our side mirror off. That was around $250 getting the part at a junkyard. Would have been way more to buy it new.

If the person who collided with the parked car does not have insurance, does anyone seriously expect them to leave a note?

Get real, people.

I backed into another parked car when I was 19 or 20. I got out and saw no damage on either car so got back in and started driving away. The person whose car is was, ran out to stop me. We looked at both cars and couldn’t find anything so she shrugged her shoulders and I left.

Now, many many years later, I am a much better driver and parker (especially with backup cameras and proximity sensors) but I would definitely leave a note if it happened again. Although, I rarely have paper and pen with me so that could be a limiting factor.

You don't understand why they left, because you would never leave. People are different.
I work with several who do the craziest things and then explain why they did what they did. It all makes sense to them only.
Their brains work differently.
I know someone who would say that since cops were not called, it wasn't a crime. Everything is black and white for them.

The only justification for not leaving a note is if you make contact with the bumper area of a car at low speed (<5 mph) and there is no visible damage—basically a bumping while parallel parking scenario. This is what bumpers are for and is not damage IMO. The only understandable (but not justified) scenario for not leaving a note is that you are still a kid and just panic. Otherwise, you’re a complete jerk for not accepting accountability for your own mistakes and imposing the costs on someone else.
