When we moved the laundry upstairs from the basement, we insulated the new laundry room (it's invetween 2 bedrooms). We do laundry at all hours of the night (spouse in particular likes the delayed wash feature to run it when electricity is less expensive), and no one is disturbed by it. Not worried about leaks. Do not move laundry to the basement, nobody wants that

You people are crazy. My inconsiderate husband and children insist on doing laundry at all hours. If the washer & dryer weren’t in the basement, it would be impossible to sleep! Those stupid things make the floor rattle, sing their useless done songs, and belong far away from where people sleep!!

I like set in the basement because it allows me to leave piles of laundry out before folding. Right now we have it on our main floor but the laundry room is in the mudroom so laundry wanders into the family room and we have baskets just sitting there for days until someone folds them. I'd prefer that to be in the basement or upstairs. When we finish our basement, I might add laundry down there - it would be nice to sit and fold laundry in front of the tv down there instead of in our main living area.

My washer and dryer are on the floor with the bedrooms. One leak over the years, quickly contained. Now that I'm battling with arthritis I can tell you if we have basement laundry it would be miserable. People get old. Don't put it in the basement.

Surely you can just keep it in your mudroom? Add hooks and shelves? I’ve had basement laundry and upstairs laundry, and upstairs is a massive upgrade. Vibration, noise and leaks truly aren’t an issue. We have ours in a room off our bedroom and it’s super convenient.

Carrying stuff in the stairs is not great as you age.

I’m pp and just finished this fascinating thread. I’m early 50s and haven’t ever thought that carrying laundry up/down two flights of stairs was a big deal. I’m def the odd woman out since it never occurred to me that it was an issue. But I like to walk.

This is me. I love the laundry area in my basement because I can leave a pile of unwashed, unsorted clothes on the floor, and another pile of ready-to-fold clothes on the big table next to the dryer. Personally I’d hate a laundry closet. Much happier with a lovely, spacious laundry room in the basement.

Older renovated home and we kept laundry in the basement bc of space. No issues with it at all. We have a finished laundry room, and a nice setup downstairs. I’ve never had an issue with carrying it up and down the stairs. It’s extra steps in my daily step count anyway. Ha!

If you have a basement, why wouldn't you have the laundry there? Just makes sense.

Don't do it, assuming you have a 2 level house. My first house had it in basement, current house is on main floor. I will never buy a house with laundry in basement again.

My laundry is in the basement. I told the plumber I want the washer on the main level, even if it meant it had to sit in the middle of the living room. He extended a pipe up from the basement so it can go in the kitchen.

Our starter home had the laundry room in the basement, and our current home has it upstairs in the hallway where the bedrooms are. The previous owners moved it from the basement upstairs by converting one of the two linen closets.

I will never buy a house with the laundry room in the basement again.

Even when we’ve casually looked at other homes, I dislike the laundry room on the main floor since it’s usually by the kitchen and the noise presumably carries into the living space. I’ve only seen one home where the laundry room was smartly positioned closer to the mudroom and garage and there was a long hallway separating it from the kitchen, living room, etc.—but that was a massive house with 4 entry points on the first floor.

I think the op should keep the kitchen on the main floor or move it upstairs. Basements are for kids and bugs.

We moved our laundry upstairs but if I could have done that and also kept the main floor mudroom laundry, I would have - for dog stuff, washable shoes, and the grosser outdoor clothes.
