This and Reddit are kindergarten compared to what’s really out there.
I’m a happy kindergartener, but the big kids are going to continue to cause problems.

Some of it is also layout. The voting on comments and the ability to create subthreads within a comment section (and to minimize any subthreads you aren't interested in) means people can have actual conversations on a specific topic with real back and forth.

People also seem to write more substantive comments on Reddit, especially when discussing complex topics, and there is more tolerance for this. On DCUM, people freak out if a comment is more than a couple sentences. But that's not uncommon on Reddit and within many posts, the most upvoted comment will be one of the longer ones, because it provides useful info or outlines an interesting argument very well. It's hard to do that in a quippy one liner, especially when discussing political or cultural issues.

Most of Reddit is not "deep, dark." I go on Reddit and interact with normal middle aged people in a respectful and pleasant way over benign hobbies like rock climbing and gardening. There is nothing dark about it. I'm sure some subs on Reddit are less wholesome, but actually the moderation on Reddit is pretty aggressive and it's very easy to self-select into subs with good culture and enforced rules of engagement.

I think people confuse Reddit and 4Chan maybe? Reddit is less toxic than Facebook in my experience.

I think DCUM can be much more culturally toxic than Reddit due to the level of anonymity. On Reddit you have an identifiable username and if you behave badly, people can block you or report you and it will actually impact your ability to participate in the community. On DCUM people are mostly completely anonymous and even if someone gets banned for trolling or violating site rules, it seems like they always come back. I think Jeff is limited in what he can do because he's banning IP addresses an not accounts.

I still find DCUM useful but it's much more the Wild West of message boards than Reddit, which is much more rules-based with greater consequences for misbehavior.

Reddit has fewer trolls than dcum because you have to create profiles. In general, I'd say reddit is more of an informative and interesting experience unless you end up on one that is all ironic or funny meme responses. Then it's just a waste of time.

Still a year ago a study showed 30% of reddit was ai responses. I can't imagine what r/chan is - likely 70% Russian bots trying to stow discord and prey on the disaffected.

meant more informative and interesting than dcum. of course reddit is better than r/chan. But I've thought for years creating profiles on here would raise the bar. It's the only message board I've even been a part of that didn't require a log on. It's also the only one I've been a part of where people are super embarrassed about being a part of it.

Anything that isn’t a MAGA echo chamber is a part of “leftist ideology”.
