The What to Expect the First Five Years book. Invaluable. We spent some much time on what was going on with baby and pregnant me, and then we were sent home with an actual baby! Used that thing to death, and always include it, a board book, an outfit for the right season for a 9 month old (they grow out of the TONS of newborn things you receive so quickly), and some sort of nesting cups or cubes in gifts for newborns

i bought one and gave up after a few days as it was much easier to wash my hands than to wash that after each use

my babies do love the winkel, lamaze toys and oball but not sure any are "obscure"

I am the one who suggested it. I have teens, and did not know about this when I had them, but now it's one of my go to gifts for new babies. Also makes a great stocking stuffer.
