You need to reimburse him because otherwise he's not going to be inclined to do a great paint job. If you cost him money, he'll make it up elsewhere.

I would have him paint a section of the wall, let it dry, then look at is at different points of the day.

Paint chips can look very different than actual paint on the wall, especially withdiffetent lighting.

You might find that you actuslly love the disputed paint color once it is dry and on the wall.

Another option if that shades are slightly different, is to tint all the paint he purchased to a color closer than what you want. Each paint color is based on a certain formula of pigment. It might be a situation where the paint counter can simply add 2 more parts of umber, for exsmple, to get the color you want.

I have done this with my paint before. It is fairly simple to do.

When you’re halfway through a project, the contractor really has you by the nards. It’s not a good time to start to play hardball.

He absolutely jumped the gun. Anyone with any experience would know to double confirm with you that that was the paint color you wanted. Anyone with any experience knows that you leave samples or chips up on the wall for a couple of days to see how it looks at different times of day. That said, I think you need to eat the color of the paint to keep the peace.

I feel so annoyed by this on your behalf!

If you intend to keep using him, tell him he needs to double check with you before buying anything that can't be returned in the future, you'll reimburse him this time, and then be a PITA from now on. Or you could offer to buy all the paint yourself from now on. Either way draw a line in the sand and start calling him on all his tricks.

Agree with PPs that contractors priority is moving things along, I've been presented with random stone trim and things that don't really match my tile, metal handles in colors I don't want, etc all in an effort to move it along. The key is the stuff is returnable if I reject it and if I reject it then I will timely furnish my own.

Mixed tinted paint is not returnable.

Right sorry I saw it was tinted. He's dead wrong. OP did not verbally accept his choice, and he's clearly stupid or trying to pull something. I wouldn't pay him for the paint. He should know better.
