Our pediatrician told me the same - 2 months is typical.
The antibiotics can clear it but it’s usually temporary while getting another treatment started. I used antibiotics as a teen but they eventually stopped working.

My DD did a full course of Accutane and then when she went off it the acne flared again. We looked at the laser, but it's only FDA approved for 16 and over.

My son started on minocycline and adapalene 8 weeks ago and he still has acne, but it’s better. I’m not sure how much longer to wait to see the results or to make another appointment to change meds.

Same with my DD. No results with Doxycycline. Moved onto Accutane. She finished the Accutane regiment last summer. Now she only gets an occasional acne, otherwise face and body are mostly clear.

~3 months but doctors had said we could go longer, stopped because of sun sensitivity mentioned by PP, not because of worries about resistance. Some antibiotics caused stomach upset/gut disruption or yeast infection for us, but that wasn’t the case with doxy.

Antibiotics for acne ruined my gut health.

I think my son was in Doxy for about 3 months. The next step was Accutane for 6 months.

I’m an adult now but antibiotics + BC in my early 20s were the best for my lifelong acne and finally broke me out of the worst cycles of cystic acne.

I had to go off of antibiotics because of an outdoor job and increased sun sensitivity, and then getting older and having concerns about pregnancy prevention (antibiotics + birth control= bad). I ended up on just continuous birth control and it was almost as effective but my skin was visibly better on antibiotics.

My 14.5 decided he wanted Accutane despite tiny percentage of kids impacted for growth. So far he continues to grow typically and is tall. Always has been.

From my son's endocrinologist. If he was even average height I would go for it but he's not so going to wait and hope other methods work.

It’s cystic (most likely from the way you’re describing it) and she may need accutane to prevent scarring. Topicals won’t work on cystic acne- I don’t know about antibiotics but they would likely work only temporarily. Your derm might recommend antibiotics, then accutane.

Doxycycline worked while DS was taking it- but he ended up on accutane.

Dermatologist wouldn’t put him on accutane immediately- I think insurance requires them to exhaust other avenues first.

Accutane cleared his skin- he gets occasional mild breakouts 2 years later but nothing that he can’t clear with OTC retinoid cream. No known lasting issues from accutane.

I think antibiotics work well if the breakouts can be traced to something temporary - but for long term hormonal acne, I would consider a longer term solution. I was concerned about the length of time our dermatologist was keeping DS on antibiotics.
