+1 A couple months ago I left DC for Jersey on a Friday and found out when I arrived that I would need to go to a funeral in Connecticut that Monday. Marshall’s had like eight good options that I picked from.

No self respecting teen will want to wear anything from Ann Taylor.

Ann Taylor is middle aged mom and hip grandma store.

Get her separates. A black pair of dress pants or an inexpensive basic black bias cut skirt. Pair it with a simple black sweater or top.

Or get a simple sheath or bias cut dress.

Done.

None of these options are remotely appropriate for a funeral. It's a funeral, not junior prom!

Do not make the poor girl wewr something from Ann Taylor. She is not 57.

This one is a bit matronly, but for $17.20 she could make it work for a funeral.

Except for the last one, this are some seriously crazy options. It's a funeral, not junior prom.

OMG grow up and stop trying to be such a "cool mom". A 20 year old can buy a nice black sheath dress for a funeral, then wear it to work when she graduates, and have it for years afterwards. I literally still have and wear a black wool sheath dress that I bought in college.

You must not know teens or young adults. I have both and they don't look at the brand for formal or funeral wear. They understand what societal expectations are around formal occasions! It needs to look conservative and it needs to be somber. My kids and their friends, and my friends' kids, would willingly wear any old lady brand to achieve that look.

Really, who do you take these young people for?!? Stop putting generations into stupid categories.

Here's a sheath dress with sleeves that is funeral appropriate for a 20 year old.

Oh, I think this comes up all the time because kids are growing and they don't have, like, "church clothes" all the time in the closet any more necessarily. And then a funeral comes up and they don't have anything, AND it's an especially fraught moment because you have to put more guardrails on them maybe than you usually would because you want them to meet the bar of being respectful and supportive. So now you're in a negotiation with your teenager at a moment where you really have plenty going on already, and you just want to find a dress that solves the problem and keeps everyone happy.

OP something like this plus a cardigan could work. Or the same thing from like, jcrew. But it looks like this one has just a little more stretch and youthful vibe than the "workwear" equivalent. Maybe.

Length is 36 1/2 but the dress is demure and I think above the knee is fine. It’s a petite dress and the model is not petite height.

Not everyone's families are culturally of that mindset, PP. We have East Asian and European grandparents and relatives and had to go to some funerals in both locales. Every time, it was black formalwear, no exceptions, even for kids. I am sure some American families are like this as well.

Indeed. Especially if you're immediate family of the deceased.

If you are immediate family of the deceased, you choose your dress code for yourself.

Status chasers turn everything into a game.

Too short and too tight for a funeral - athleisure is not appropriate.

I think on a 20 year old this is fine. Put a sweater over it and some dark tights.

I needed a funeral dress on short notice and was amazed at the huge selection of appropriate black dresses to choose from at Kohl’s. There were four racks.

My thought too.

Having just gone through this, it’s more about not wanting to stress about it particularly if you don’t already have something in your closet. It’s like — oh just find me something vaguely appropriate that I can order and that I will be able to maybe wear again so it’s not a total loss of money. This forum is great so that one of us who hasn’t just lost a loved one can say — look, just buy this. I ended up wearing a dress two sizes too small because I couldn’t really deal with looking online for myself. I did order a suit for my son and that was enough of a PiTA — should be easy to just order a black suit that is not too expensive not too cheap and basic, but for some reason took my forever to find the size and everything that could come in a short amount of time.
