He'll refuse to wear things, but can't seem to articulate what is ok or not ok to wear, except for no big logos, labels, or words, and no cargo pockets or other adornments. And it can only be black or gray. We've managed with a bunch of sweatpants all winter, but I'm stuck on what kind of shorts to get - most of what I see has a big logo or a bright color on it. Anyone have a go-to short they can recommend, that has the requisite look? He wears a men's medium, if that helps.

Definitely yes at our high school and middle school. Shorter shorts have been popular for at least a year or so.
OP here, this is another point of confusion I have. For the longest time, boys have worn those long, baggy shorts that come to their knees. Now it seems the shorts have to be shorter, but not *too* short. Honestly, it would be easier if they just went back to dressing up!
