My question too - are you trying to get it over the summer so they don't have to during the school year? Sadly I know some looking to do this due to locker room bullying issues.

My understanding is many do this to fit in a more strenuous academic curriculum to enable more AP classes later on.

My son and his friends do it (but not until summer after 9th) in order to be able to take more electives that they like.

Thanks for updates. My child will ask her counselor to register her for virtual va. That will be least stressful for our family. Great to know and appreciate all the details one person posted. Thank you!

NP here in regards to above: my kid did online drivers ed thru VADETS which starts every month and you get 4 months to complete it (though there are deadlines for each module to keep you on track ) so you could take it at a different time than VVA PE 10. My daughter felt it was pretty good--way harder (in a good way) than in school drivers ed when comparing with her friends. The only wrinkle you should know about is that you have a final exam that has to be proctored by someone--my friend who works at a college was "approved" by the teacher and we did it at the library (has to be in a neutral location). My daughter finished it in about 3 months as we were going on vacation and I wanted it to be done.

Between all of my HS kids we have done the following (all in the past 3 years):
PE9 with FCPS ACE
PE9 with VVA
PE10 with FCPS ACE
Year Round AP Classes with VVA

Here are my thoughts on VVA vs ACE (make a long story short - VVA is by far the better choice):
To do VVA, the counselor needs to approve during winter/spring during course selection time and the counselor is actually the one who has to register the student - parent cannot do the VVA registration. Don't let them tell you they can't register you - my kids' guidance counselor served as their "mentor" and they don't actually have to do anything during the class although they will get cc:ed on a bunch of emails.

The VVA class is better because it has more reasonable physical activity requirements (need to get 150 minutes per week of any activity, tracked on a spreadsheet as opposed to 60 mins physical activity every day with tracked heart rate in specific range and documented. Also FCPS ACE will not allow physical activities such as swim or dance, even if your kids is spending hours a day doing those activities because their heart rate has to be proved using a fitness tracker. VVA allows coaches to sign off on activity as proof.

Also, VVA does not have synchronous class requirements like FCPS ACE. With FCPS, if you miss 2 synchronous classes, you are automatically unenrolled from the class. With VVA, they have a set class time, but you can log in any time during that day to watch the class and do the work. It's much better for the unpredictability of summer schedules.

The only downside to VVA is that for HPE10 they do not offer the Driver Ed component so you would have to take that and pay for it separately on your own. For this reason, we did FCPS ACE for HPE10.

That's for school year classes - summer classes are paid for by the parents.

Does McLean accept Virtual Virginia for PE9? Would this be done through the McLean counselor or the middle school counselor?

We are looking at this for a different course because of the requirement to log in daily for FCPS and that won’t be possible. Will this be approved? Anyone tried it? We see the private school needs to be accredited and found places that are. The only other options seem to be it’s less expensive, but it’s not less expensive.

We did this for PE9 with Keystone I think. Needed pre approved and a good reason why the normal class would not work.

What counts as a good reason?

I’m sure it is entirely up to the guidance counselor’s discretion. Our issue was another EC that conflicted with class time. This was before you could pick AM vs PM session though so our worry was roll of the dice would put her in the AM session she had a conflict with.

IS FCPS no longer offering virtual summer HPE classes? My son took PE 9 last summer, but there is nothing on the website about it for this summer. All of the other virtual classes, like Econ and personal finance, are already open for registration and the site says registration is open from January-May.

re: the heart rate requirement - PLEASE everyone doing this set your child's heart rate tracker so it's in the required zone during their workout so it's not total insanity. It is the only way!

It's been done several times on this forum, search for it in the search box and go back to the spring of last year, or the year before, or the year before....this topic is brought to this forum every. single. year.

How can we raise this above the HS? This seems so bad that FCPS is inconsistent. What a missed opty to make things more efficient and effective for students.
