That's interesting but this is following Covid.

Is he still testing positive for Covid?

I have trouble with my lungs at times but surprisingly wasn’t that bad during Covid the time I had it. I was awful afterward and had bronchitis. My doctor said Covid makes it easier to come down with other stuff (so the zpak might make sense despite what a prior poster said).

Another time I had a bad cough that wouldn’t go away after an illness and it wasn’t responsive to anything. I eventually went to a pulmonologist (after 3 months) and was diagnosed with silent acid reflux.

I posted earlier about how the prescription cough syrup with codeine helped me. I also had a Z-PACK and I think that helped a bit. As it is, I’m 3 weeks out from testing positive and still coughing though. This Covid cough is rough.

Instead of just a steroid inhaler, he needs an oral or IV steroid. Prednisone can be administered in an IV for the first dose (but doesn't have to be) and then you take pills for the next week. For example, he might take 6 prednisone pills twice a day for day #1, then only 5 pills twice a day, for day #2 and taper off. This will really help - I've had this issue more than once. Please call his doc and request this. Not sleeping because of a cough is so miserable.

Also - put a humidifier in his room and have him sleep on his back but at an angle (kind of reclining) So use 2-3 pillows to make him in a reclined position.

Is the cough coming from his chest or throat? Since the cough meds aren't working, it could be a reactive cough from the throat. Warm salt water gargles, lozenges and popsicles may help and can't hurt.

Can teens do codine? Call the doc and ask. That stuff stops coughs in their tracks.

Codeine

The prescription cough medicine with codeine is what finally gave me a break from my Covid cough. I was also using inhalers and the cough pearl drops, but they weren’t helping to slow the cough down at all. Talking made the coughing worse (still brings it on and I’m now almost 3 weeks post positive PCR).
