It may just come down to the fact that Trump wants to be a dictator, so he idolizes those that are. And he sees the world in purely transactional terms - Trump has no ideology, he doesn't care about freedom or peace or making people's lives better. ALL he cares about is himself - making himself look better, getting praise, getting re-elected.

So he'll make any deal with anyone if it serves his own personal interest. Putin and Km and Erdogan and Xi and MBS all know this, so they use it to their advantage.

Remember, too, Putin is a highly-trained intelligence officer who, by now, totally knows how to handle Trump.
