His gun was set up for a right handed person. I am right handed and I wear my backpack on the left side too. That leaves my dominant right hand available for anything I need to do
Left handed person here. Backpack and all carry is only on my left. The gun arrangement was strange & probably someone not accustomed to firearms. It's possible handedness was not a consideration for him.
The gun is much better place for a right handed person. A leftie isn't going to reach around like that.

I thought this too. The timing right before the Olympics is suspect.
NBC sent Mary Carillo to take over Savannah's leading role in coverage: https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/everything-to-know-about-mary-carillo-savannah-guthrie-olympics-coverage-replacement
That's the only person who benefitted from this entire ordeal.

The handle would be closer to the left hand or is the camera reflecting it opposite?
Think about how you actually hold a gun. How does a leftie pull a gun out of the holster like that.

They knew a celebrity’s mother lived in town so decided to make a last ditch effort to get the money they owe someone. They are obviously incompetent with this and did not put a lot of effort into planning it. They are not familiar with how ring doorbell works. It seems like they thought the camera would only activate after ringing the doorbell. That’s why they were comfortable moseying around and looking right at it. They have no idea how ransoms work. Unfortunately, they were likely also too incompetent to realize an 84 year old might have meds essential to their survival.
I agree with this. Criminals aren't smart and they make mistakes.

This is 1000 percent more likely of a scenario than any family member being involved.
But they would have created an actual random note and left it at the scene so they could get the money. They could easily claim the reward by leaving her somewhere.
None of that happened.
How can you know that's what they would do with a note? There is no logic to this.
