You would think that an adult would be balanced enough to realize that the public school kids who have to travel across the city to get games are in far greater danger than she is at Jelleff where there hasn’t been the remotest hint of violence, even though people are very resentful of Maret.

Celina Gerbic, a Dupont Circle resident whose 16-year-old son plays soccer on Jelleff’s athletic field, has begun to worry that she could be physically assaulted on the premises. “You feel that way,” she told me, “because of the vehemence and vitriol.” The cause of all these bad feelings is the city’s recent extension of a controversial agreement giving exclusive prime-time field hours at Jelleff to the Maret School, the elite private school in Woodley Park that Gerbic’s son attends.
Good grief.
What a douche. If Maret feels so unsafe being around public school people at Jelleff, they should just cancel their backroom deal and leave Jelleff’s public park to the public.

Oh wait, maybe that's why Maret doesn't roll over - it's the whole private school network ensuring the timeslot remains reserved for the $pecial ones.
As far as I know it's just the British School. Are there others?
How come no one has complained about the British School's buses which seem to use Jelleff as their private parking lot? And the British School is a for-profit school, not a 501c3 like Maret.
People who might otherwise use that parking lot have a right to complain. The public school kids who could use the field aren't pressed for parking, they can walk to the field from school.
Perhaps instead of the British school, the WTU teachers from Hardy could park at Jelleff. It might be a lot to ask to get them to walk half a block but they might step up . Then their parking lot could be given up to an on-site playing field for the Hardy students. Win win except perhaps for the British school. BTW How much does the British school pay DC/Jelliff to use the parking lot for its vehicles?

You really want to blame everyone but Maret, don't you?

First, Hardy admin has made a choice to use the school property to provide a free parking lot for staff instead of building a bigger field on the north side of the school. Second, with a few phone calls why can’t Hardy use the Western High field currently taken by Duke Ellington? It’s just a short walk away. My advice to Hardy is stop whinging and trying to score cheap political points at the expense of the Maret community. Focus on the needs of the Hardy kids over the perks of the staff. And get off your a$$ and don’t roll over at the first ‘no’ from the DCPS bureaucrats downtown.
One could look at the pristine green space on Maret’s campus and ask why they didn’t convert that into a field. Is it because they don’t have the money to pay for a market rate field like every other private school in DC does?
The lawn in front of the Maret estate house is part of a national register historically-protected landmark. DC's Historic Preservation Board wouldn't let Maret convert it into a field even if Maret wanted to do it.
They could do a lot of things to the grounds as long as they are not building structures like buildings. But it is convenient for them to say they can’t do anything (despite having 1 field and expansive parking onsite).
Why doesn’t Maret dig up that parking lot, bury it and build a field on top? Sidwell did it. No vision at Maret, I guess. Same staid, hide-bound and insular institution it has always been. Oh well.

Oh look, it’s the poster who spouts about magically converting a small amount of parking into a large field. You can post the same assertions here 400 times and it won’t make them any more realistic.
Besides, nothing about Hardy’s situation impacts the reality that Maret’s sweetheart deal was born in corruption.
Nothing about Hardy’s situation impacts the reality that it will always be a decidedly second-tier, also-ran to Deal. Academically, athletically, basically. But at least Hardy has its school uniforms. So there’s that.

Numerous witnesses, meanwhile, echoed Maret parent Susan Reilly, who insisted that this field fracas “bears a resemblance to our nation’s divisive political landscape.” Patrick Scott, Maret’s director of middle school admissions and social media, warned that at “a time when there’s an active ‘cancel’ or ‘call out’ culture, it’s vitally important for elected officials and others to come to decisions while being fully informed.” Maret head of school Marjo Talbott notes.
