Also Duke has a 6% acceptance rate so this is really not something to fret over unless your child gets in. He or she is statistically much more likely to get into UVA -even in-state from NoVa.
I disagree: It now takes a higher GPA and higher test scores to get into UVA over Duke
Ha ha no
Haha Yes. The average high school GPA of Duke entering students is only a 4.06. The average GPA of entering UVA students is 4.27.
You cannot compare weighted GPAs across schools as weighting schemes are not standardized. Test scores are a better measure.
This is bc Duke has way more private school kids with unweighted GPA's. I went there and it's FULL of privilege. It's like a country club. SO MANY KIDS FROM ELITE PRIVATES AND BOARDING SCHOOLS. Not a good experience for kids on financial aid. Beautiful place, excellent education but not
for everyone.
Isn’t that also the “scene” at UVA? Yacht club / ski chalet kids that wear dinner jackets to football games?
No. It’s a public school. Most of the population is Virginia residents and not just nova.
There are a couple frats known for being wealthy but you’ll find that everywhere.

The percent of students at UVA and Duke who come from private vs public is virtually identical - 67% from public at Duke and 68% at UVA.

Sure there is a tier of schools (Chicago, Northwest, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Berkeley, UPenn, ..., etc. come to mind) that I believe are more prestigious than UVA, but they are not worth that much a tuition difference compared to in-state UVA, if you are the one to pay in full and you are not the super rich.
If you could get a financial aid that makes the whole cost at those schools comparable to UVA, sure definitely pick those schools. Otherwise, need to think harder before you decide.
Based on average net price and earnings, projected ROI for Duke (actually Net Present Value) is significantly higher than UVA. 30 Year NPV rank is 26 for Duke ($1.327M) vs a rank of 128 and $0.981M for UVA. This analysis was done by the Center for Education and the Workforce and is based on federal data. https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/collegeroi/
The Center for Education and the Workforce also did analysis which compares actual earnings at colleges to expected earnings based on selectivity and the mix of majors of graduates (certain majors, like engineering, have significantly higher salaries, at least initially, than many other majors). In that study, median earnings for Duke graduates was $76,700 vs expected of $61,800, for a "value add" of $14,900. UVA had median earnings of $58,600 vs expected of $61,000, for a value add of negative $2,400.
https://cew.georgetown.edu/publications/reports/page/2/
Even if the number is true, the NPV for the cost difference of UVA in-state makes the difference insignificant.
No. The NPV includes the in-state cost difference.
They probably use the average cost of UVA which includes out-of-state tuition. There is no way Duke will have a net plus of $30k for the 10 year NPV compared to UVA in-state. I can understand if they amortize that cost difference over 30 or 40 years, Duke may come out ahead. So I don't think it's a fair comparison to the UVA in-state cost.

I’m with the PP— ours won’t go private without lots of aid unless MIT, Caltech and maybe Harvard or Princeton. And this from someone who went to Duke. Not worth it anymore.
If you don't come from connections or privilege, it could be that you are more likely to be exposed to it and benefit from it at Duke.
