By “they” you mean the grand jury, right? That’s who refused to prosecute him. The DOJ certainly tried.

The IG said he lacked candor.

Trump fired him to be vindictive. Not for whatever lie he may have told. And the president can't just fire civil servants because he doesn't like them.
